Position Title Interpreter, Sign Language

Job Summary Reporting to the Director of Disability Services, the sign language interpreter provides services to students who are deaf, hard‑of‑hearing, or have other communication disorders.

The interpreter assists faculty, staff, students, and community members by providing sign language accommodations under Section 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, the ADA, and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 at all campus locations during daytime hours.

The role requires an emphasis on diversity, inclusion, and accessibility, supporting the mission of Joliet Junior College.

Key Responsibilities

Represent Joliet Junior College and uphold its core values: respect, inclusion, integrity, collaboration, humor, well‑being, innovation, quality, and sustainability.

Translate oral communication into American Sign Language for students, faculty, staff, and community members during classroom sessions, meetings, campus events, telephone calls, and other settings.

Interpret and transliterate American Sign Language and signed English into oral or written language for hearing individuals and others not fluent in sign language.

Follow scheduling, attendance, and other procedures outlined in the Sign Language Interpreter Handbook.

Abide by the ethical principles of the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.

Maintain the confidentiality of student documentation and records.

Maintain accurate and timely records of interpreting activities.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree.

Valid Illinois Interpreter license with Intermediate, Advanced, or Master proficiency and/or certification such as BEI or RID.

Valid Illinois driver’s license and access to a car.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and the community, demonstrating cultural competence and emotional intelligence.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree.

Two years of educational interpreting experience.

Proficiency in English and Spanish for verbal and written communication.

Demonstrated multicultural competence.

Work Schedule Schedule varies depending on department needs.

This is a part‑time, daytime-only position.

Physical Demands

Standard office physical demands.

Ability to travel between campus locations.

Working Conditions

Duties performed indoors in the usual office and/or outdoor environment.
