Role:
Senior IT Telecommunication Engineer
Summary
This position requires the ability to perform all Associate and Journey level work independently. The role provides leadership among engineers, demonstrating a high level of technical knowledge and excellent written/verbal communication skills.
Responsibilities
Creating of the construction package.
Leading engineering teams on large, complex telecommunications projects.
Designing, engineering, and approving robust, secure, and reliable telecom networks to support critical utility infrastructure.
Managing or assisting with client and stakeholder communications and meetings.
Reviewing and approving designs and estimates for compliance with all applicable standards, regulations (including NERC CIP), and best practices.
Preparing technical studies, alternatives analyses, and making long-term recommendations.
Working closely with other engineers to ensure consistent, high-quality engineering product delivery.
This role must ensure decisions consider long-term impact as well as short-term results and will provide final approval of designs and estimates prior to issuance.
Core Technical Requirements
Optical Transport Networks:
Deep knowledge of
SONET, DWDM, and TDM multiplexing . Experience with fiber optic design, including
OPGW and ADSS
cable.
Packet & Transport Systems:
Hands-on experience with
IP/MPLS, Carrier Ethernet, and OTN
technologies and associated network equipment (e.g., Cisco, Nokia, Ciena).
Microwave & Radio Systems:
Experience engineering and pathing
TDM and packet-based microwave radio systems . Familiarity with private radio (LMR) systems is a plus.
Utility-Specific Applications:
Proven experience designing telecom networks to support
SCADA systems , teleprotection (relay) circuits, and grid operations.
Network Protocols:
Strong understanding of L2/L3 routing protocols (e.g.,
OSPF, BGP ) and industrial protocols (e.g.,
DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850 ).
Compliance & Security:
Demonstrable knowledge of
NERC CIP cybersecurity standards
and how to apply them to network design and asset management.
Design & Documentation:
Proficiency in creating and reviewing design packages, Bills of Material (BOMs), and network diagrams using
AutoCAD, Visio, or GIS tools .
Job Duties
May perform all the functions of Associate and Journey Telecom Engineer, and in addition:
Creation of complex and detailed construction packages.
Manage large, highly complex projects and perform engineering analyses, comparative studies, and develop conceptual and detailed network designs.
Develop innovative solutions to resolve challenging technical issues related to network performance, compliance, and obsolescence.
Provide technical advice to Project Managers on scheduling, budget impacts, and resource allocation.
Analyze project alternatives and provide detailed engineering and technical issue resolution.
Monitor and control engineering tasks, perform job walk-downs, and manage field handoffs.
Keep up-to-date on emerging technologies and their application to utility telecommunications systems.
Establish clear communications with clients, suppliers, and contractors to ensure project scope is well-defined and meets technical requirements.
Scope Resolves problems of moderate to highly complex scope. Assignments may require standard solutions or the development of innovative solutions for challenging technical issues. Works independently most of the time, with limited feedback, but provides leadership and direction to other engineering personnel. Demonstrates advanced technical and communication skills.
