Experience, education, and/or training used to meet the minimum qualifications and in response to the qualifying questions must be verifiable through information contained in your application. Duties and Responsibilities
This is an advanced professional position in a county wide disease prevention program. The position requires utilization of epidemiologic analytic techniques and involves collection of information regarding individual case reports as well as participation in outbreak investigations. This position investigates the distribution and determinants of disease prevalence in populations to determine and describe means for detection, prevention, intervention and control of health problems. Initiate case investigations for reported diseases to include diseases associated with food, water, and those suspected of being due to weapons of mass destruction biological agents during specified time intervals. Conduct appropriate and targeted field investigations. Advises patients regarding their disease and how to prevent future occurrence (if the disease can recur). Review and analyze data and create reports. Provide educational presentations to the community and department employees. Conducting complex research studies for surveillance of disease and disease syndromes (of individuals and population outbreaks) to include diseases associated with food, water, and those suspected of being due to weapons of mass destruction biological agents. This process would include interviewing individuals and writing up these reports so they can be submitted to the electronic database. This may also entail questionnaire and interview design. Will also advise patients regarding their disease and how to prevent future occurrence (if the disease can recur). Communications – Participate in teleconferences, Epicom, and various meetings where regional and state information is shared. Will visit and consult with community health care providers giving information to the current reporting requirements for communicable disease. Other Related Duties As Required.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of the terminology, principles and techniques used in biological and epidemiological research, analysis or testing. Knowledge and understanding of microbiology and pathology of bacteria and viruses. Knowledge of food and waterborne diseases. Knowledge of the methods of data collection and analysis. Knowledge of the methods of data collection and database development. Knowledge and understanding of statistical software. Knowledge of Hospital Epidemiology/Infection Control practices. Knowledge of contemporary issues in environmental and occupational health protection, as well as exposure pathways and hazards in the workplace and the environment. Skill in the use of investigative and interview techniques. Ability to collect, record and analyze scientific data relating to the biological sciences. Ability to conduct biological research studies or analyses using scientific methods and techniques. Ability to perform quantitative analysis of scientific data.
Minimum Qualifications
Willing to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Current employee of Florida Department of Health employees, (includes OPS, Career Service, SES or SMS employees). Valid driver’s license, free of major infractions and access to an automobile to be utilized for work purpose. Have experience investigating multiple infectious diseases. Have experience conducting appropriate and targeted field investigations.
Preferred Qualifications
Currently working or finished a Master’s degree in Public Health. Bilingual, fluent in English/Haitian Creole or English/Spanish. Have experience in Public Health research. Have experience in food handling, safety, protocols, and food inspections. Have experience in conducting surveillance including ESSENCE, Influenza Like Illness surveillance (ILI), CDC’s Epidemic Information Exchange (Epi-X) or Vital Statistics surveillance. Have experience working with statistical software (SAS, SPSS, Epi Info, Access, Excel).
