Supervising Deputy Attorney General - Civil Appeals Overview: The Appeals Division represents the State of Indiana before state and federal appellate courts in civil and criminal cases, and in federal district courts in habeas corpus proceedings.

The Supervising Deputy Attorney General (DAG) assigned to the Civil Appeals Section primarily represents the State in civil appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, the Indiana Supreme Court, and the Court of Appeals of Indiana, and provides supervision to several Deputy Attorneys General as assigned.

Responsibilities

Represent the State’s interests on appeals from final determinations of state and federal trial courts, including civil matters and direct appeals from administrative agencies.

Handle a wide range of legal subject matters arising from Indiana state government, including constitutional challenges, judicial review of agency orders, child welfare, torts, civil rights, employment and labor law, environmental and natural resources law, eminent domain, contract, child support, and habeas corpus matters related to prison discipline.

Manage all aspects of an appeal: confirming deadlines and scheduling, communicating with stakeholders, motion practice, briefing, oral argument, and post-decision review and proceedings.

Ensure all representation conforms to the Rules of Appellate Procedure, division style and format practice, office policies, professional conduct rules, and applicable laws and guidelines.

Supervise assigned Deputy Attorneys General and contribute to appellate litigation strategy as needed.

Other duties

Assist the Section Chief in reviewing briefs, formulating appellate litigation strategy, and coordinating with the litigation division and other areas of the office.

Perform other duties consistent with the division and section as assigned, including research projects, supervision of law students, and occasional administrative tasks.

Strong research (Westlaw) and writing skills are expected; persuasive written and oral appellate advocacy is essential.

Qualifications

Admitted to the Indiana Bar.

Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to relate effectively to both legal and non-legal professionals.

Ability to multi-task and manage a large caseload.

Ability to zealously advocate on behalf of the State.

Ability to work well with others; proficient in computer skills.

Ability to manage relationships and effectively communicate with clients, supervisors, and colleagues.
