Under the general supervision of the Senior Assistant Attorney General and the Chief Deputy Attorney General, the Supervising Deputy Attorney General directs and monitors the work of a team of Deputy Attorneys General, may directly supervise paralegals, provides training, handles general administrative matters, interviews and selects staff, and personally performs the most difficult and complex legal work in criminal trials, federal and state habeas corpus litigation, other writs, and appeals, including capital litigation.
Attorneys in the Criminal Division, Appeals, Writs and Trials unit regularly appear in a variety of courts, including the California Courts of Appeal, the California Supreme Court, and federal courts. The work is fast‑paced and challenging and requires an extensive knowledge of criminal law, excellent research and writing skills, and experience in death‑penalty litigation.
