General Functions

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Aquatics Director is responsible for planning, development, supervision, and administration of all aquatic programming.

Ensures that daily care of members is a key priority through supervision of aquatics staff.

Responsible for recruitment, training, and scheduling of aquatics staff as well as planning for continuous training program for staff. This includes lifeguards and swim instructors.

Develop strategies to recruit staff, onboard and develop them for success.

Conducts lifeguarding, swim instruction, First Aid and CPR trainings. Ensures records of staff certifications are current and complete.

Ensures programs and services meet community needs. Supervise existing program activities, establish, and expand programs as needed. Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information.

Monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations.

Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations. Maintains regular, clear, and concise communication within area of responsibility.

Manages the program, including developing and monitoring the program budget to meet fiscal objectives; compiling program statistics to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of and participation in program; securing and scheduling pool facilities; and creating and scheduling the classes.

Serves as member of staff leadership team, participates in meetings, conducts tours, fills Manager on Duty shifts, and assists with annual fundraising campaign.

Manages safety and risk portfolio for the branch and serves as a member of the Association Safety and Risk Cabinet.

Attends and participates as a member of the Association Aquatics Cabinet.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities Directly supervises lifeguards, swim instructors, aquatics specialist, and/or assistant aquatics director in accordance with the organizations policies, mission and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees, planning, assigning and directing work, appraising performance, addressing and resolving issues.

Education And Experience

Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent preferred.

One to two years related experience preferred (e.g., as an aquatics coordinator, supervisor, or assistant director).

Minimum age of 21.

Current Lifeguard (American Red Cross or YMCA), CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, AED certification.

Lifeguard Instructor Certification and Certified Pool Operator preferred or be willing to obtain within six months of hire.

Strong organizational abilities as well as oral and written communication skills.

Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

Work Environment And Physical Demands

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, swim, demonstrate aquatic techniques, frequently move around the work environment and lift up to 50 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.

Regularly work in environment of 80+ degrees air temperature.

Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to supervise program activities.

Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.

Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.

Must be able to use a computer for extended periods of time and be able to communicate using a computer and phone/smart device.

Evening and weekend hours required: coordinate hours with assistant aquatics director.
