Overview The Central Sterile Technician reports to the Manager Sterile Processing. Under the direction of the Lead Sterile Processing Technician, performs duties to reprocess surgical instruments and medical equipment according to established decontamination, cleaning, high level disinfection (HLD) and sterilization procedures for all surgical services and hospital departments that require reprocessing of equipment. Responsibilities

Prepare individual case carts for each surgical procedure.

Access records via computer terminal and print pick lists from the automated Centricity Preoperative Report Tree.

Print reports and verify scheduled procedures before loading case carts; locate supplies and stock case carts after verification.

Send completed, labeled case carts to the Operating Room and respond to calls for additional equipment and instruments as needed.

Restock and inspect exchange carts, emergency surgical carts, specialty carts (ENT, Cysto), intubation trays and inpatient floor specialty trays in accordance with standardized supply lists and par levels.

Transport carts, instruments and supplies to the Main Operating Room (MOR), SurgiCenter Operating Room (SCOR), and other departments using Sterile Processing Department (SPD) services.

Receive used surgical case carts and equipment; unload, decontaminate, and perform high level disinfection as required.

Inventory loaner instruments brought into the SPD; assess functionality and verify cleaning prior to the SPD cleaning process.

Follow OSHA/AAMI procedures, practices and safety precautions for decontamination of contents and equipment.

Clean instruments according to designated processing methods (hand, sonic unit, or automatic washer); sort and inspect for damage.

Assemble, lubricate, recalibrate and test power surgical tools, scopes, retractors and other equipment after cleaning to ensure proper working order; perform minor repairs as needed and notify the department manager for further repairs.

Assemble instruments into standard and specialty sets using OR team-provided pick lists; document issues with instrument sets and inform management.

Prepare items for sterilization with proper wrapping or containers; ensure correct sterilizing integrators and tape are used and items are loaded correctly; program sterilization cycles for time, temperature and drying.

Document and log all instrument sets sterilized and all mechanical and biological sterilization tests before releasing items as sterile.

Re-shelve sterilized items and transport to designated departments as needed.

Perform daily Biological Indicator, Daily Air Removal Test (DART) and other quality tests on sterilizers and cleaning equipment across surgical services; operate sterilizers per manufacturer guidelines.

Clean sterilizers per policy and procedure to maintain optimum efficiency.

Monitor and set programs for Steam, Sterrad, and Steris sterilizers according to manufacturer guidelines.

Maintain stocked materials, disposables, and reusable supplies including sterilized items used in Surgical Services; receive and inspect new materials against packing or purchase orders.

Prepare and maintain manual and computerized records of activities and productivity; store supplies according to procedures; check inventory for outdated items and assist with returns as needed.

Support quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control in line with OSHA, AAMI, hospital and department policies.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Computer proficiency with knowledge of Centricity Preoperative Manager Report Tree or similar software; word processing skills preferred.

CRCST through HSPA (or equivalent through CBSPD) within 12 months.

Knowledge of surgical instruments, equipment and medical terminology preferred.

Six months of experience in sterile and reprocessing or related area preferred, including case cart system experience.

Interpersonal skills to effectively interact with staff and outside vendors at all levels.

Organizational and numerical ability to receive, count, store materials, and prepare and maintain case carts and documentation.

Ability to follow precise written instructions for decontamination, cleaning, sterilization and case cart preparation procedures.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements Working environment exposes incumbent to heat and cleaning chemicals; safety procedures and protective clothing/equipment are required. Visual and manual dexterity are needed to operate washers and sterilization equipment; ability to stand for long periods, lift and carry moderately heavy trays, push carts, and receive/store supplies and equipment.
