Brown University Health . Summary: The Central Sterile Technician reports to the Manager Sterile Processing. Under the direction of the Lead Sterile Processing Technician, performs duties to reprocess surgical instruments and medical equipment, according to established decontamination, cleaning, high level disinfection (HLD) and sterilization procedures for all surgical services and hospital departments that require reprocessing of equipment. Responsibilities

Prepares individual case carts for each surgical procedure.

Accesses records using computer terminal and prints pick lists from automated Centricity Preoperative Report Tree; prints reports and verifies scheduled procedures before loading case carts.

Locates supplies, stocks case carts, and sends completed, labeled case carts to the Operating Room.

Responds to requests for additional equipment and instruments; restocks and inspects exchange carts, emergency surgical carts daily, specialty carts (ENT, Cysto), intubation trays and inpatient floor specialty trays in accordance with standardized supply lists and par levels.

Transports carts, instruments, and supplies to ORs and departments that use SPD services.

Receives used surgical case carts; unloads instruments and equipment for cleaning, decontamination, and HLD after donning PPE.

Inventories loaner instruments, assesses functionality, and verifies cleaning prior to SPD cleaning.

Follows OSHA/AAMI procedures, safety precautions to decontaminate contents and equipment.

Cleans according to designated processing methods (hand, sonic unit, automatic washer); sorts and inspects instruments for damage.

Assembles, lubricates, recalibrates, and tests power surgical tools, scopes, retractors, and other equipment after cleaning; performs minor repairs as needed and notifies manager for further repairs.

Assembles instruments into standard and specialty sets using OR team pick lists; documents issues with instrument sets and informs managers.

Prepares items for sterilization by instrument type; uses correct sterilizing wrap/container and integrators, sets correct sterilizing cycle (time, temperature, drying).

Documents and logs all instrument sets sterilized; records mechanical and biological sterilizing tests before releasing items as sterile.

Re-shelves sterilized items or transports to designated departments; performs daily biological indicators, DART, and other quality tests on sterilizers and cleaning equipment.

Operates Steam, Sterrad, and Steris sterilizers per manufacturers\' guidelines; maintains and stocks materials, disposables, and reusable supplies used in Surgical Services.

Receives and inspects new materials against packing slips or purchase orders; maintains records of activities and productivity; stores supplies per established procedures.

Checks inventory for outdated reprocessing items and expiration dates; notifies manager when items are no longer usable and assists with return.

Maintains quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control per OSHA, AAMI, hospital and department policies.

Minimum qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Computer proficiency with knowledge of Centricity Preoperative Manager Report Tree or similar software; Word processing programs preferred.

CRCST through HSPA (or equivalent through CBSPD) within 12 months.

Knowledge of surgical instruments and equipment and medical terminology preferred.

Six months of experience in sterile and reprocessing or related area preferred, including case cart system experience.

Interpersonal skills to effectively interact with staff and outside vendors at all levels.

Organizational and numerical ability to receive, count, and store materials and prepare required documentation.

Ability to follow precise written instructions for decontamination, cleaning, sterilization, and case cart preparation procedures.

Work environment and physical requirements Working environment exposes incumbent to heat and cleaning chemicals. Any potential hazard is minimized by safety procedures and protective clothing and equipment. Visual and manual dexterity to operate automatic washers and sterilization equipment. Physical ability to stand for long periods, lift and carry moderately heavy trays, push carts into the sterilization unit, and receive/store supplies and equipment.

Compensation Pay Range: $19.58-$32.31
