Job Description

Position: Heavy Equipment Operator (District 7) – State of Oklahoma

Department: Department of Transportation, District 7. Location: Multiple. FLSA Status: Non-Exempt. Employment type: Full-time. Reports to: Road Maintenance Supervisor.

Note: Pre-employment background check and drug screening may be required. Some positions may require a Physical Abilities Demonstration and the ability to perform essential functions of the job family.

Responsibilities

  • Operate equipment or heavy machinery such as trucks, tractors, road graders, bulldozers, front-end loaders, cranes, backhoes, paint machines, semi-trailers, snow removal equipment, and other equipment as needed.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance on equipment and facilities.
  • Repair failures in roadway shoulders or bridge decks; repair and/or replace signs, posts, guardrails and fences.
  • Provide traffic control assistance using stop/slow signs or flags to direct highway traffic.
  • Apply herbicide to highway rights-of-way to control weeds and other vegetation.
  • Remove debris including tires, animal carcasses, spilled items, and other obstacles.

Qualifications

  • Level I: No formal education or experience required; basic operation and manual labor capabilities; follow instructions.
  • Level II: At least one year of experience operating heavy equipment and performing skilled maintenance tasks.
  • Special Requirements: Possession of a valid Oklahoma driver's license at time of employment; CDL may be required depending on role; ability to pass drug test; willingness to travel and work varying hours; physical requirements include standing, walking, lifting up to 80-100 pounds, and vision requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of safe operation and maintenance of heavy machinery; ability to operate and service equipment; follow instructions; communicate effectively; traffic control during maintenance operations.

Compensation

Base pay range: $40,600.00/yr for Heavy Equipment Operator, Level I; $47,100.00/yr for Heavy Equipment Operator, Level II.
