Overview
Position: Custodian / Maintenance — 12 month, non-exempt. Base pay range: $29,167.00/yr - $41,746.00/yr (commensurate with experience). Salary details are provided in the job description and per district salary scale.
Responsibilities
- Follow instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies. Use as directed.
- Check and secure the building at beginning and end of shift to ensure safety and cleanliness.
- Clean rooms, hallways, cafeterias, restrooms, offices, stairways, and other areas according to district standards.
- Sweep, mop, buff, strip, and wax floors; operate assigned power equipment and hand tools (buffers, auto scrubbers, extractors, high pressure washers, high speed buffers, vacuums, brooms, mops, squeegees).
- Clean rugs, carpets, upholstery, blinds; wash walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, doors, sills; remove graffiti and clean glass areas.
- Complete work orders and replace light bulbs; set up and break down chairs, tables and equipment for meetings or events.
- Assist with setup of facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, events, etc.
- Clear snow from entrances and walks; spread sand and ice-melting chemicals.
- Perform grounds-keeping duties; clear debris and maintain grounds; receive deliveries and assist in unloading trucks; deliver supplies to classrooms, bathrooms, and other areas.
- Empty wastebaskets; participate in recycling; keep building and premises neat and clean at all times; maintain grounds free of litter.
- Wash walls and equipment; use ladders when required; open/close buildings and secure doors and windows; ensure lights are off unless left on for safety.
- Remain on school premises during school hours and during non-school hours as required by principal; perform daily classroom cleaning and corridor maintenance; strip, wax, and polish floors; wash and disinfect restrooms and stock supplies.
- Set clocks and replace batteries; wash windows inside and outside at least twice a year; clean blinds; launder cleaning rags and dust mops.
- Replace lighting supplies; unload/deliver supplies; refill restroom dispensers; operate safety and equipment as required.
- Perform grounds tasks such as grass cutting, tree trimming, shrub pruning; mulch shrubs; scrape and sand walks and driveways as weather requires.
- Move heavy furniture or equipment as needed; make minor building repairs and submit requests for more extensive repairs.
- Monitor building safety and security; paint rooms and equipment; repair furniture and lockers as needed.
- Raise and lower the U.S. flag daily at designated times.
- Comply with local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash and waste; attend safety meetings and related trainings.
- Support and enforce policies and safety regulations (OSHA, health and safety guidelines); participate in training on cleaning methods, new products, First Aid/CPR/AED, and bloodborne pathogens.
- Report supply needs and maintenance issues promptly to supervisor or building administrator; respond to emergencies as necessary.
- Other duties as assigned by the building principal.
Required/Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: ability to follow work orders, read/write/speak English fluently, describe maintenance or repair needs, establish cooperative working relationships, perform basic math, work in poor weather, follow standard procedures and schedules.
- Physical requirements: ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and over 50 pounds rarely; frequent walking, standing, bending, grasping, repetitive motion; occasional stooping, balancing, crouching, kneeling; exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, odors, chemicals, and loud noises.
- Education/Experience: High School Diploma or GED/equivalent; previous cleaning/maintenance experience desirable; Virginia Driver’s license or ability to provide transportation; health certificate indicating physical ability to perform custodial tasks.
- Other: capable of strenuous manual tasks for long periods; able to perform heavy lifting and moving; able to work during school and non-school hours as required.
Working Conditions & Other Details
- Travel: Occasional travel between schools or to central office may be required.
- Safety: follows MSDS and district chemical hygiene program; wears appropriate safety gear (masks as applicable).
- Environment: work in school facilities with exposure to typical custodial hazards; may include outdoor elements during grounds duties.
- FLSA Status: Non-exempt.
