Job Summary Third Grade Boiler Operator Job Description: Ability to do the work of a Boiler & Chiller Plant Operator without more than normal supervision. Must have the ability to perform tasks including operating and monitoring of high-pressure Boiler Plants and auxiliary equipment. Ability to recognize and detect abnormal high pressure boiler plant and steam system operating conditions and take immediate actions to eliminate emergency situations and restore normal operating conditions; perform constant meter readings and record findings for fuel oil supply and steam production. Work under the supervision of a Plant Director or Chief-level employee who reviews work for completion. Healthcare experience strongly preferred.
Responsibilities
Operate and monitor high-pressure steam boilers fueled by natural gas and fuel oil.
Operate and control auxiliary equipment requiring continuous attention to monitor efficiency and control pollutants in accordance with local, state, and federal requirements.
Operate, control, and maintain auxiliary equipment such as centrifugal pumps, heat exchangers, fans, deaerators, flash tanks, condensate receivers, water softeners, steam traps, steam PRVs, OSY valves, and VFDs.
Maintain constant observation and record-keeping of meters and production/supply readings to determine boiler plant status and fuel consumption.
Perform operational maintenance on boilers, clean burners, oil and grease moving parts, pack valves and pumps, and clean water/oil strainers.
Locate and repair electrical problems in burner controls and safety devices; replace flame scanners as needed.
Collect water samples and test feed water, boiler water and condensate; determine appropriate treatment to control corrosion and chemical concentrations; adjust blowdown methods and chemical feed pumps as necessary.
Qualifications/Experience
Experience with starting, operating, adjusting, and stopping high-pressure steam boilers fueled by natural gas and fuel oil.
Operate and control auxiliary equipment ensuring efficiency and compliance with pollution control requirements.
Operate, control, and maintain a variety of auxiliary equipment (pumps, heat exchangers, condensate systems, etc.).
Maintain continuous observation and record-keeping of flow meters and production gauges.
Perform preventive maintenance on boilers; basic mechanical tasks related to burners and pumps.
Locate and repair limited electrical problems in burner controls and safety devices.
Collect and test water samples; adjust treatment programs to manage corrosion and chemical concentrations.
An applicant for a Class 3 - Steam and Hot Water Heating Boiler Engineer shall comply with all DC regulations related to boiler operation and maintenance.
