Overview
FORKLIFT OPERATOR - 3rd Shift at SteelSummit Holdings, Inc. The Hi-Lo / Forklift Operator is tasked with efficiently transporting materials using a forklift, supporting packaging operations, loading and unloading trucks, and organizing the staging area for slitters as needed.
Responsibilities
- Conduct daily Forklift Safety Inspection Reports.
- Provide support to packaging lines.
- Efficiently load and unload trucks.
- Unload lumber and skids.
- Receive and store supplies.
- Maintain cleanliness by removing scrap from the floor.
- Organize skidded material storage.
- Utilize scanning technology for accurate placement of materials.
- Adhere to assigned duties and responsibilities.
- Maintain strict compliance with safety protocols outlined in the Plant Employee handbook.
- Meet attendance standards as per the Attendance Policy.
- Perform additional tasks as required.
Qualifications
- High school education or GED required.
- Ability to work safely and efficiently in a fast-paced production environment.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand/walk on a concrete floor for the entire shift.
- Effective communication and ability to work well in a team environment.
Physical and Mental Requirements
- Employees are standing/walking 20%; sitting 80%; lifting up to 50 lbs as needed.
- Reading charts, tags and written procedures; may be required to climb ladders to reach riding cages on some cranes; measuring material as required; printing or writing legibly to complete all required paperwork.
Equipment, Aids, Tools
- Must be licensed for hi-lo operation.
- May be required to use calipers, tape measure, micrometer, hand tools, plasma cutter; and operate an overhead crane.
- Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) including gloves, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots.
Working Conditions
This work site is in the plant. The plant is on one level with access from the parking lot. There are stairs in the rail pit and up to the slitter platforms, and short ladders on the banding lines.
- Seasonal temperature variations from 60 to 95+ degrees; exposure to diesel fumes from trucks; noise varies with machine operation.
- Potential hazards include strains, cuts, and crush injuries.
Supervision and Attendance
Supervision and/or co-worker assistance are readily available. Attendance is closely monitored; unscheduled absences may jeopardize meeting customer requirements due to insufficient staffing.
Consequences If Essential Functions Are Not Performed
- Failure to follow safety rules may result in loss of position or termination.
- Failure to meet Attendance Policy may result in termination.
- Failure to observe safety procedures may result in serious injury, damage, or loss of material or property.
- Failure to move material promptly may cause production or customer delivery delays and potential loss of business.
- Failure to complete appropriate paperwork may result in inventory shortages or incorrect billing.
- Improper storage of material may result in damage or loss.
