Overview Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco Internal Audit team seeks a Lead Auditor for the Reserve Bank Operations Audit Team. You will join the District-focused internal audit team that audits Cash Operations, Federal Law Enforcement, Facilities Management, and other Administrative Services. The lead auditor is responsible for leading assurance and consulting work, including planning, conducting, documenting, and reporting audit results to determine the adequacy and effectiveness of controls over financial reporting, operations, and compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

The Reserve Bank Operations Audit Team travels to branches to perform on-site audit work in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Phoenix, and Salt Lake City. Travel assignments are typically five days and occur about twice per quarter; shorter trips (1-2 days) may be required in some months. Applicants should live within commutable distance to downtown San Francisco (Embarcadero), Los Angeles (downtown), or Salt Lake City.

Essential Responsibilities

Supervise and review moderate to moderately high-risk audit work performed by audit team members in accordance with internal and external policies and audit standards. With guidance, evaluate team performance after each assignment and, with limited supervision, guide auditors to meet quality expectations. May supervise 1-4 employees on an assignment basis.

Define risk-based audit scope and objectives for district-focused audits; establish assignment time frames and budgets; develop or revise audit programs.

Execute the approved audit program under general supervision with increasing independence; evaluate governance and risks and determine the effectiveness of controls over the reliability of information, operational efficiency, asset safeguarding, and compliance with rules and regulations.

Identify, assess, and address audit exceptions; present clear explanations of issues to audit management and operating personnel with recommendations.

Prepare written audit reports and coordinate edits with internal reviews and business management.

Assess the adequacy of corrective actions from audit findings and review follow-up work performed by other auditors.

Maintain knowledge of activities in assigned risk areas; develop or maintain audit programs and perform risk assessments for areas of liaison coverage.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) or Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) required within 24 months of placement.

Five or more years of internal audit experience, preferably in a lead or auditor-in-charge role.

Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and ability to resolve conflicts in complex situations.

Solid understanding of general audit applications, data analytics, and IT general controls.

Proficient in Microsoft Office; knowledge of risk management, compliance, and data frameworks.

Strong understanding of risk, control concepts, root cause analysis, and ability to assess design vs. operation vs. outcome. Familiarity with IPPF and COSO frameworks.

Strategic thinking, data synthesis, and ability to identify patterns and connect the dots in risk analysis.

Strong presentation, facilitation, and project management skills.

Ability to travel approximately 15% of the time.

Must be a US Citizen or Green Card holder with intent to become a US Citizen.

Preferred Skills/Experience

CIA certification (preferred).

Internal auditing experience in financial services, government, or large cash operation environments (e.g., casinos).

Knowledge of data analytics software.

Base Salary Range: Min: $100,300; Mid: $130,400; Max: $160,300 (Location: San Francisco)

Final salary and offer will be determined by background, experience, skills, internal equity, and alignment with market data.
