Overview
Bike Mechanic (Bike Builder) at Sports Basement. Reports to Sr. Bike Mechanic, Lead, Manager, Sr. Manager, Assistant General Manager, and General Manager. Supervises: Entry-level Bike Mechanic. Compensation: $17-$31, DOE, non-exempt position. Specific starting wages depend on location and experience. Customer Service/Service Writing: greet 100% of service customers, call for help when appropriate, and communicate work orders clearly (verbal and written). WOW Customer Service: engage customers, meet basic needs, and create ambassadors; utilize SB tools (Sales Saver, JSY, LYP, Lightspeed) to deliver outstanding service. Bike evaluation: walk customers through the evaluation process, note concerns, and identify potential issues with bikes. Team collaboration: work with Lead and Management to ensure day-to-day shop operations meet expectations; assist neighboring zones/departments as needed. Quality and safety: maintain a clean, safe work area; ensure repairs/builds are thorough and completed at a consistent pace; educate/train staff in service writing; share updates and best practices. Responsibilities (Mechanic Metrics)
Maintain labor metrics (e.g., average dollars in labor, appropriate hourly rates) and ensure high-quality repairs/builds. Proficient in Lightspeed; align work with weekly summaries; complete and document information accurately for customers and staff. Proactively improve skills and product knowledge through internal and vendor training. Staff Experience & Development
Maintain open communication; be approachable and available for questions or issues; participate in zone/department trainings and clinics. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications
Previous retail or industry experience. Knowledge of tubular and tubeless tire setups. Passion for cycling; advocate for bikes. Knowledge of gear in the assigned department; ability to create a WOW experience for customers. Self-starter with ability to prioritize daily workload. Positive, fun vibe that elevates customer and staff experience; strong verbal and written communication. Attention to detail; basic computer skills; flexibility and adaptability. Must be able to lift 40 pounds, bend repeatedly, and stand for long periods; maintain a clean and safe work environment. Time management and problem-solving skills; available to work during operating hours including most weekdays, weekends, and holidays (excluding Thanksgiving and Christmas). Familiarity with relevant tools (Google Docs, Shopify, POS systems, Lightspeed, etc.); training available on software platforms.
