An internship with American Family Insurance is a great opportunity to build your skillset and explore your career interests. Our summer student internship is a 10 to 14 week program that starts in mid to late May and ends in August. During your internship, you'll work on impactful projects that make a difference at our company, with our customers, and in our communities. You'll also gain exposure to different areas of our business and have numerous opportunities for networking and coaching.
Interns may be eligible for a one-time hiring bonus to assist with housing costs depending upon proximity to an AmFam office location.
Compensation Minimum: $25.00 Compensation Maximum: $39.00
As a Data Engineering intern, you will assist in establishing and maintaining strategies to meet organizational objectives. Under the direction of a senior level employee or manager the individual will work on projects that support the business area goals and results. Completes tasks using both interpersonal and technical skills appropriate to the specific job assignment, while adapting to new or changing situations in a team environment
Responsibilities • Develop an understanding of our business, corporate culture and structure to support your work. • Contribute creative ideas and strategic approaches in response to changing situations. • Performs exploratory data analysis to determine which questions can be answered effectively with a given dataset. • Works on cross-functional teams to develop and deploy data-driven applications and products, particularly within the space of data engineering. • Support Python ETL frameworks using Cloud (e.g. GCP, AWS) Services to build data pipelines that efficiently process and transform data from multiple sources • Develop comprehensive pytest test suites to ensure data pipeline reliability, including unit tests for transformation logic and integration tests for end-to-end workflows • Configure and maintain Terraform modules for infrastructure provisioning, focusing on creating reusable components for database resources, compute instances, and IAM permissions • Utilize GitLab CI/CD pipelines to automate testing, building, and deployment of ETL processes with proper environment segregation • Document technical implementations with clear architecture diagrams and runbooks to support operational handoffs • Contribute to code reviews and implement feedback to maintain high code quality standards across ETL codebase • Develops and automates data quality checks. • Write and optimize SQL queries for various data platforms including Google BigQuery, Cloud SQL (PostgreSQL/MySQL), Amazon Redshift, and RDS
Requirements • Must be in student status at an accredited 4-year college or university during the internship, graduating August 2026 or later. • Must be pursuing a Bachelors, Masters, or PhD. • Major/program must align with internship role. • Hands-on programming experience in Python, with an emphasis towards building ETL workflows and data-driven solutions. • Understanding of database internals, such as partitioning, indexes and SQL optimization. • Knowledge of cloud computing platforms (e.g. GCP, AWS). • Understanding of Infrastructure as Code (e.g. Docker, CloudFormation, Terraform, etc.)

Work Location: This role may be considered for a Full-Time in Office or Hybrid work arrangement based on the selected candidate's location. Work locations for this role include Madison, WI; Boston, MA.
