Job Summary
Under limited direction and in compliance with technical, administrative, regulatory, or professional standards and guidelines, the police major directs and manages the activities and operations of a major division of the Greenville Police Department. The major performs complex and highly responsible planning and supervisory duties associated with crime prevention and law enforcement activities of the City, including division supervision, implementation of departmental policies, oversight of law‑enforcement activities, planning, budgetary support, and coordination with other City officials or outside agencies. The major monitors laws, rules, and regulations, evaluates administrative and operational activities for compliance, addresses complaints, participates in investigative and disciplinary processes, leads special projects, and assumes command during the absence of the Police Majors or Police Chief.
Essential Functions
Provide Leadership and Management Oversight for Assigned Division:
Administer day‑to‑day operations of the assigned division.
Formulate strategies to meet community policing goals using data and employee feedback.
Supervise sworn and civilian staff, manage assignments, conduct performance counseling, investigate misconduct, and participate in disciplinary hearings.
Coordinate special teams (SWAT, Crisis Negotiation, Dignitary Protection) as directed by the Police Chief.
Oversee succession planning and staff development, author training schedules, and approve timecards.
Manage administrative, training, and budgetary functions for the Administration Division; plan special events; apply for grants; oversee technology research; and serve as CALEA Accreditation Manager.
Supervise Field Operations Division functions, standardize patrol procedures, produce intelligence reports, and coordinate traffic and support activities.
Lead Investigations Division crime‑investigation sections, victim advocate functions, and inter‑agency task forces.
Firearms and equipment compliance for all support units and enforcement teams.
Perform Administrative Duties:
Prepare internal reports, brief leadership, ensure operational materials and equipment are available, and conduct vehicle inspections.
Assist in evaluating service delivery, staffing, and system improvements, and recommend policy changes.
Apply for grants and prepare administrative reports, resolutions, and council reports.
Update policy documents and general orders as required.
Act as Liaison Between Police Department and Residents:
Establish working relationships with community organizations, city departments, and the public.
Represent the department in inter‑agency and civic activities.
Address internal and external complaints, resolve issues with law‑enforcement personnel, residents, or groups, and participate in professional and community meetings.
Serve on community boards and committees as requested.
Support Prosecution of Criminal Cases:
Understand and enforce federal, state, and city criminal and traffic laws.
Employ appropriate court procedures, file warrants, tickets, and supporting documentation, and testify as required.
Perform Other Duties as Assigned.
Job Requirements
Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, business, social work, human services, or related field.
At least eleven (11) years of continuous service as a certified police officer with a minimum of two (2) years of current and continuous time in service as a Lieutenant or higher rank at the Greenville Police Department or an agency of comparable size.
Obtain certification as a Class 1 officer from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy within one (1) year of employment.
Driver's License Requirements
Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License.

Environmental/Health and Safety factors: Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards, monthly exposure to wetness and/or humidity and noise, seasonal exposure to extreme temperatures, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, daily exposure to physical danger or abuse from suspects, weekly exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards (e.g. downed power lines, vehicles damaged in accidents). Physical demands: Vision, hearing, talking, and smelling; standing, reaching, climbing, fine dexterity, handling/grasping, walking, foot controls, balancing, carrying, bending, sitting, crouching and stooping, kneeling, twisting, lifting and crawling; extreme physical exertion; ability to wrestle a suspect, run over uneven terrain, chase suspects, climb fences, stand on a fixed post, and perform crowd and riot control activities. Strength demands: Exert up to 10 pounds constantly, 20‑50 pounds frequently, 150 pounds occasionally, 200 pounds rarely; duty equipment between 20‑40 pounds.
