Position Overview
The 911 Communications Shift Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Nash County 911 Communications Center during an assigned shift. This position ensures the effective and efficient delivery of emergency communications services, including call-taking, dispatching, and coordination with public safety agencies. The Shift Supervisor provides leadership, guidance, and support to telecommunicators, ensures compliance with policies, procedures, and guidelines, and serves as the acting authority in the absence of senior management. Key Responsibilities
Supervise and coordinate the activities of 911 telecommunicators during assigned shifts. Monitor call-taking and dispatch operations to ensure timely, accurate, and professional service delivery. Provide and oversee on‑job training, coaching, and mentoring to new and existing staff. Evaluate employee performance and provide feedback to the 911 Director and 911 Deputy Director. Address and document personnel issues involving staff, including performance concerns, policy violations, and interpersonal conflicts, in accordance with county policies and procedures. Handle escalated calls, complaints, or unusual incidents and make critical decisions as needed. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as county and departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines. Maintain shift logs, incident reports, and other documentation as required. Coordinate with law enforcement, fire, EMS, and other public safety agencies to ensure effective communication and response. Assist in scheduling, shift coverage, and timekeeping functions. Participate in quality assurance and improvement initiatives. Perform the duties of a telecommunicator when necessary. Serve as an essential employee and report to work during emergencies, inclement weather, or other events when other county offices may be closed. Be available for on‑call duty as scheduled, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to ensure adequate supervisory coverage and response to operational needs. Qualifications & Certifications
Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions under pressure. Strong problem‑solving and conflict‑resolution abilities. Knowledge of geography and jurisdictions within Nash County. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately. High school diploma or GED required. Considerable experience as a 911 telecommunicator and dispatching. Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD). Emergency Fire Dispatch (EFD). Emergency Police Dispatch (EPD). NC DCI Modules 1 & 3. CPR/BLS Certification. Strong knowledge of CAD, radio, and phone systems. Proficiency in EWARRANTS and other public safety software systems. Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and during emergencies.
