A Solid Waste Driver/Operator is a skilled worker responsible for driving, operating and maintaining a refuse collection vehicle in both residential and commercial areas. The Driver/Operator also serves as the lead worker on the route with supervisory responsibility for assigned solid waste workers.
Responsibilities
- Drive a refuse packer or commercial dumpster truck on an established route while remembering assigned routes and the locations of refuse containers.
- Conform to state and local driving and safety regulations.
- Operate the refuse collection vehicle efficiently: line up the vehicle to container bins, activate controls to raise and dump the bin, lower containers, assure proper placement to prevent damage, and use controls to empty dumpsters into the truck, compact refuse, and unload the truck at a dump site.
- Maintain the vehicle: spray with chemical disinfectant, rinse with water, sweep the truck, check oil, water and brake fluid levels and tire pressure, make minor field repairs and adjustments, and report needed repairs and servicing.
- Assist with manual labor in picking up refuse bins and lifting and moving large objects.
- Prepare daily truck reports and keep incidental records of collection activities.
- Direct one or more workers in assigned tasks.
- Follow oral and written instructions to efficiently complete assigned tasks.
- Effectively communicate problems and safety concerns to supervisors.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Hold and maintain a valid Florida Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- Two or more years of previous experience driving heavy‑duty automotive equipment.
- Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards associated with operating heavy‑duty automotive equipment and of precautions for the safety of assigned workers and the public.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Tasks involve the performance of physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching, and may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20–50 pounds). Duties may require intermittent lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavier objects (100+ pounds).
ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Work includes exposure to all types of traffic conditions. Due to the nature and location of the work environment, there is the potential for intermittent exposure to unpleasant elements; e.g., heat, humidity, rain, fumes, etc. Some tasks involve working with moving parts, carts, and materials handling where physical risk is predictable and/or controllable by strict observance of standard safety precautions.
