Overview Clinical Nurse I – MedSurg role provides direct patient care in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act to assigned patients on Medical/Surgical units. The nurse collaborates with other disciplines of the health care team to ensure safe, timely and high-quality patient care. Responsibilities include providing physical assessments, nursing interventions, pain management, medication administration, specimen collection, meeting nutritional needs, teaching and discharge planning. Utilizes the nursing process based on evidence-based best practices to meet patient care needs.

Responsibilities

Evaluate and adjust the nursing care process as necessary, consult with resource personnel when making ethical/legal/medical decisions, and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Clinical Nurse I’s at Magnet designated facilities only require a BSN or that a BSN program is started within one year of hire date and BSN degree is attained within two years of starting the BSN program.

BSN preferred.

Additional Requirements For Specific Departments Are As Follows

Advanced Brain and Spine Unit: Fulfills mandatory stroke education requirements per certification. Neurology and Neurosurgery telemetry experience preferred.

Acute Rehab: Experience in Functional Improvement Measure (FIM) preferred. Previous rehab nursing experience preferred.

Cardiac Telemetry: Completion of relevant course/experience preferred. ECG test required. Stroke education per certification agency.

Gamma Knife: Telemetry experience preferred. ECG test required.

GI Lab: Moderate Sedation experience required. Strong computer skills and clinical systems proficiency.

Gyn/Urol: Medical/Surgical and Gyn/Urology experience preferred.

Heart and Vascular Institute (HVI): Cardiac telemetry experience required.

Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI): ECG test required. Orthopedic nursing experience preferred. BSN preferred.

Home Health: 1 year home health care experience preferred. Must be a licensed driver with insured vehicle in good working order.

Hospice: Minimum of two years’ experience; licensed driver with insured vehicle in good working order preferred.

Ortho Surgery Center: ECG test required. Two years clinical/management experience preferred.

Outpatient Chemical Dependency Program: At least 2 years in addiction/behavioral health environment preferred.

Outpatient Treatment Centers Infusion: Oncology infusion experience required for Oncology infusion; non-Oncology infusion: no experience required.

Pain Management Center: Various procedural/clinic experience preferred.

Radiation Oncology: Oncology experience preferred.

Interventional Radiology, CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Main X-Ray: Interventional Radiology experience preferred. Vascular access/PICC experience preferred.

Surgical – 6 West: SUB-ICU experience preferred. Surgical-6 West unit experience preferred.

Telemetry: Previous telemetry experience preferred. NIHSS certification as designated by Manager may be required.

General note: ACLS and/or other department-specific certifications may be required or preferred as indicated.

Licenses License Required Registered Nurse in the State of California - Current and in good standing.

All Clinical Nurse I's are required to have current BLS certification prior to clinical rotation.

Acute Rehab: FIM certification.

Advanced Brain and Spine Unit: NIHSS and ACLS required upon hire.

Cardiac Telemetry: ACLS required upon hire; annual stroke education per Hoag guidelines.

Gamma Knife: ACLS required upon hire.

GI Lab: ACLS.

Gynecology/Urology: Chemotherapy & Immunotherapy Provider Card required to administer chemotherapy on hire or within a year of hire as designated by manager.

Heart Valve Clinic and CVOR: BLS and ACLS required; stroke education annually.

HOI: ACLS.

Nursing Staffing: ACLS and BLS.

Outpatient Treatment Centers Infusion: Oncology infusion certification required; non-Oncology infusion varies.

Oncology: ACLS; Chemotherapy & Immunotherapy Provider Card required.

Radiation Oncology: ACLS required within 60 days of hire; OCN preferred.

Certifications Preferred

Acute Rehab: CRRN and NIHSS certification.

Advanced Brain and Spine Unit: CNRN and/or SCRN.

Cardiac Telemetry: PCCN.

HVI: PCCN.

Gamma Knife: PALS certification preferred.

Outpatient Infusion: non-Oncology certification preferences noted.

HHNB Interventional Radiology/Imaging: CRN preferred.
