Assistant Professor of Geography (Human Geography)

— Appointment Type: Full Time. The Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Anthropology at Christopher Newport University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Human Geography, effective August 2026. The department includes 17 full-time faculty and more than 400 students, with programs in Sociology, Anthropology, Criminology, Social Work, and Geography, and involvement in Environmental Studies and Health Studies programs. The university plans to launch a new undergraduate certificate in GIS in the 2026-27 academic year. The area of specialization is open. The successful candidate will teach courses across the human geography curriculum and play a foundational role in the GIS curriculum. The nominal teaching load for tenure-track appointments is 3-3. A Ph.D. in Geography, Sociology, or a closely related field is required for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. Exceptional candidates may be considered for a higher rank; ABD candidates may be considered for the rank of Instructor if the Ph.D. is not yet completed. Responsibilities

Teach courses across the human geography curriculum and contribute to the GIS curriculum. Help shape the new undergraduate GIS certificate with a focus on GIS applications in the social sciences and environmental studies. Engage undergraduate students in research; pursue and publish scholarship; participate in department, college, and community service. Qualifications

Ph.D. in Geography, Sociology, or a closely related field is required for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. ABD candidates may be considered for the rank of Instructor. In some cases, exceptionally well-qualified candidates may be considered for appointment at a higher rank. Department Information
