About the Division of Youth Services
The Division of Youth Services (DYS) is a Colorado Department of Human Services agency mandated to provide residential and non‑residential services for youth aged 10‑21. DYS operates fifteen secure facilities and provides juvenile parole services statewide. The Division also manages the Colorado Youth Detention Continuum, a state‑funded program that supports youth at risk of further involvement in the juvenile justice system.
Overview of the Position This position is open only to Colorado state residents. The role delivers primary health care to detained, pre‑trial, and committed youth. The facility’s health authority (RHA) ensures accurate health screens, SOAP notes, pharmacy orders, and referrals. The physician‑assistant or advanced practice nurse leads the medical clinic, oversees staff competence, coordinates specialty care, and collaborates with mental health teams.
Responsibilities
Perform physical examinations, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and formulate evidence‑based treatment plans.
Conduct health appraisals, mental status exams, and maintain accurate documentation in the electronic health record.
Supervise clinic staff: observe clinical skill, review documentation, provide training, and manage scheduling.
Coordinate care with medical, dental, and mental health providers, including making referrals and obtaining prior authorizations.
Serve as the facility’s lead medical liaison with the mental health team and other clinical services.
Maintain accurate pharmacy orders, ensure medication safety, and provide guidance on medication management.
Develop and update clinic protocols, policies, and quality metrics; report monthly statistical data to facility leadership.
Participate in multidisciplinary committees (facility management, medical leadership, safety, etc.).
Act as the first line resource for staff during emergency medical situations and make critical clinical decisions.
Assist with training and onboarding of new staff, interns, and student clinicians.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
Current, valid licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or as a Physician Assistant from the Colorado Medical Board.
Prescriptive authority (RXN status) in Colorado (Per DORA).
Preferred Qualifications:
At least two years of experience with prescriptive authority in Colorado.
Experience in adolescent health care, acute and chronic illness management.
Proficiency in electronic medical record documentation.
Prior state employee experience (preferred).
Work Schedule Sunday‑Saturday, flexible shifts with possible weekend coverage. Hours to be determined during interview based on facility needs.
Conditions of Employment
Full background check (CBI, fingerprint, court databases, Medicare fraud, reference checks, license verification, drug screen, PREA, Trails, CAPS).
Must obtain a Colorado Advanced Practice Nurse or Physician Assistant license within one year after hire.
Shift work: 24/7 facility may require evening and weekend coverage.
Valid U.S. driver’s license required.
Minimum age 21 years.
Completion of DYS Pre‑service Training Academy, Field Training Program, and mandatory annual training.
Application of DYS Sexual Risk Screening Tool during the hiring process.
