Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences – Harlan County
Location: Harlan, KY
Job Summary The Extension Agent will develop, implement, and evaluate a plan of work based on locally identified needs to improve quality of living for families and individuals. The agent will design and deliver educational programs that focus on healthy choices, nurturing families, aging, financial stability, healthy homes and communities, nutritious food, and community leadership.
Responsibilities
Plan and implement educational programs that strengthen families and individuals.
Develop expertise and serve as a resource in family and consumer sciences programming areas including food and nutrition, family resource management, human development and family relations, health, safety and wellness, leadership development, clothing and textiles, housing and the environment, home based and micro business.
Implement leadership programs such as Kentucky Extension Homemakers to develop personal and organizational leadership skills.
Assist in dissemination of information on subjects relating to Agriculture, Family Consumer Sciences, 4‑H, and Community and Rural Development.
Travel, including overnight stays, to visit clientele at sites throughout the county.
Stand, walk for long periods; handle average‑weight objects up to 25 lbs.
Attend evenings and weekends as needed; most weeks will exceed 40 hours.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Family & Consumer Sciences or related field. Preferred: Master’s Degree and advanced education in areas such as Family Sciences, Child Development, Nutrition, Human Nutrition, Food Science, Merchandising, Hospitality Management, Community Leadership Development, Consumer Economics, Health Promotion, Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy, Human Health Sciences, Public Health, Nursing, or similar.
No set minimum required experience; preferred experience in family and consumer sciences programming.
Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing with groups and individuals and through mass media.
Ability to use the computer for program delivery and management.
Leadership skill and a positive role model.
Clear criminal background check and child abuse/neglect clearance from the Cabinet for Health and Family Services.
