This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) and may receive a sign‑on bonus. Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, and regular salary increases are offered. Paid time off is 50-55 days per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 Federal holidays, and possible 5 days paid absence for CME). Retirement benefits include a traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and a federal 401K with up to 5% VA contribution. Federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long‑term care insurance are provided, with many programs carried into retirement. Optional $1,000 per year reimbursement is available for continuous medical education (CME) for board‑certified physicians.
Key responsibilities include:
Provide expert consultation and treatment to patients in the outpatient Hematology/Oncology clinic and coordinate care with other services within the Buffalo VA Medical Center.
Triage and prioritize consultation requests from Primary Care providers and other specialists.
Obtain medical histories, perform physical examinations, order laboratory tests, and develop and prescribe treatment plans.
Coordinate medical management with Primary Care and other multidisciplinary team members.
Perform administrative tasks as assigned, including peer reviews and ongoing professional practice evaluations (OPPE).
Provide Hematology/Oncology on‑call services as assigned.
Work schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM (tour will be discussed during the interview process).
Essential qualifications:
United States citizenship (non‑citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens cannot be recruited).
Doctor of Medicine (MD) or an equivalent degree from an ACGME or AOA accredited institution.
Full, unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. state, territory, or Commonwealth.
Completed residency in an accredited Hematology/Oncology specialty leading to board certification (or approved OBGYN/HS/OB if applicable).
Board eligible or board certified in Hematology/Oncology; fellowship training is preferred.
Proficient in written and spoken English.
Subject to background and security investigation.
Must pass pre‑employment physical examination and participate in the seasonal influenza vaccination program.
Additional requirements:
U.S. citizenship or qualified non‑citizens (see policy).
Urinalysis for illegal drug use prior to appointment; refusal results in denial.
Selective Service registration for males born after 12/31/1959.
Completion of online onboarding and identity verification.
Participation in the probationary period if required.
Preferred experience: Board eligible/board certified Hematology/Oncology, fellowship training, and experience in academic training programs.
Physical requirements: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
