Duties

Provide guidance and supervision for medical students and residents assigned to General Medicine House Service/subspecialty services and clinics according to facility standards.

Participate in and attend medical center committees as assigned by the Section Chief and/or Chief Medical Service.

Participate in the selection of new staff when requested; prepare for promotions and recognition of outstanding performance of staff.

Revise work schedules and assignments to meet frequent, abrupt, and unpredictable changes in workloads and deadlines.

Participate in various facility programs designed to enhance and improve the delivery of patient care services, such as Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) teams.

Clinical

Provide quality patient‑centered care to inpatients and outpatients for adults age 18–65 and older adults 65+ as assigned by the Chief, Medical Service.

Maintain approved clinical privileges in Hematology and Oncology and all required training for privileges.

Demonstrate sound decision‑making skills, both clinical and administrative.

Consistently demonstrate expertise in diagnosing and treating seriously ill, multi‑symptomatic patients when clinical assignments dictate.

Complete all medical record documentation, encounters, and trainee supervision attestations in the electronic medical record within prescribed timeframes.

Develop the initial plan of care and update the plan, serving as a resource person to less experienced staff and acting as a leader in developing standards of care.

Academic

Participate in the formal education of residents and medical students by presenting teaching rounds, lectures, conferences, etc.

Participate in grading sessions for medical students and GME trainees assigned to services.

Demonstrate and train medical trainees in procedures required to provide optimal patient care.

Assist in developing and implementing education and training programs for medical students and residents rotating through the Medical Service’s accountable Clinical Services.

Compensation & Benefits

Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases.

Paid Time Off: 50‑55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 federal holidays, up to 5 days CME).

Requirements

U.S. Citizenship; non‑citizens only if no qualifying citizens are available.

All applicants subject to urinalysis for drug screening prior to appointment.

Selective Service Registration required for males born after 12/31/1959.

Proficiency in written and spoken English.

Subject to background/security investigation.

Must complete an online onboarding process and provide acceptable identification.

Must pass pre‑employment physical examination.

Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program.

May be required to serve a probationary period.

Qualifications

Doctor of Medicine or equivalent (MD/DO) from an approved U.S. institution.

Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a state, territory, or the District of Columbia.

Residency training in Hematology/Oncology or an equivalent core specialty approved by the VA.

Board Certified in Medical Oncology, Board Eligible in Hematology (or eligible for board certification).

Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience

Experience as a Staff Physician – Hematology Oncologist within a VA or similar setting.

Clinical experience with adults 18+ in inpatient and outpatient settings.

Experience mentoring residents, fellows, and medical students.
