The Opportunity Catholic Charities of Buffalo (CCB) is at a pivotal moment in its long history of providing hope and help to individuals and families across the eight counties of the Diocese of Western New York. Touching the lives of more than 135,000 people throughout over 50 programs and locations, CCB is one of the most comprehensive human service agencies in the region and a critical expression of the Catholic Church’s mission of compassion, acceptance, and respect for everyone.

The next President & CEO will be charged with leading a bold redefinition of CCB’s future, identity and strategic direction. This is an opportunity for a visionary, faith-driven leader to partner with a supportive Board — chaired by the Bishop of Buffalo — and an experienced leadership team to reenergize one of the region’s most vital Catholic institutions. The next CEO will inspire confidence, mobilize resources, and shape a clear, sustainable path forward at a time when the organization and the communities it serves need it most.

Position Overview The President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) serves as the senior-most leader of Catholic Charities of Buffalo and as the Diocesan Director for Catholic Charities, reporting to the Board of Trustees through the Bishop of Buffalo (Board Chair). The CEO is responsible for overall strategic and operational leadership, ensuring that CCB’s mission — rooted in Catholic values — is delivered with excellence, compassion, and impact.

This role calls for a mission-centered, innovative, and financially astute executive who can lead a complex human services organization with an annual budget exceeding $30 million, more than 300 employees, hundreds of volunteers, and wide-ranging programs in behavioral health, family services, refugee and immigration support, workforce development, and more.

Strategic Vision & Innovation: Reimagine CCWNY’s role in the community, refine its mission focus, and adapt programs to meet evolving needs while ensuring sustainability.

Financial Stewardship & Fundraising Leadership: Drive operational efficiency, restore fiscal health, and lead a successful Annual Appeal and other philanthropic initiatives.

Relationship Building: Strengthen engagement with pastors and parishes, build corporate and community partnerships, and serve as a visible, credible representative of CCWNY and the Catholic Church.

Board & Governance Partnership: Work closely with the Bishop-led Board, foster strong governance, and activate the Board’s advisory and ambassadorial potential.

People & Culture Leadership: Coach, mentor, and elevate a talented leadership team; foster a Christ-centered, caring, and high-performance culture.

The CEO will serve as the primary external face of CCB, representing the agency at Church, community, and civic events; advocating for policy and funding priorities; and sustaining partnerships that expand the reach and impact of Catholic Charities across Western New York.

Key Responsibilities

Shape, articulate, and steward CCB’s Mission, Vision, and Values in alignment with Catholic social teaching.

Lead the creation and execution of a strategic plan to clarify CCB’s identity, optimize its program portfolio, and ensure long-term viability.

Champion adaptive change and continuous improvement to keep the agency responsive to evolving community needs and Church priorities.

Financial Stewardship & Fund Development

Ensure financial sustainability through sound fiscal management, cost control, and prudent use of resources.

Lead the Annual Appeal and develop diversified fundraising strategies to grow individual, parish, and corporate support.

Cultivate relationships with major donors, corporate partners, foundations, and the Diocese to expand revenue and impact.

Leadership & Culture

Build and sustain a high-performing, mission-driven leadership team; promote coaching, talent development, and succession planning.

Foster a Christ-centered culture that values compassion, acceptance, and respect for everyone (C.A.R.E.).

Communicate transparently with staff and stakeholders, fostering trust, alignment, and engagement.

Board & Bishop Partnership

Serve as the primary partner to the Bishop and Board, ensuring alignment with diocesan vision and priorities.

Engage and mobilize the Board to strengthen governance, resource development, and community advocacy.

Community & Church Engagement

Represent CCB across the Catholic community, parishes, and the broader Western New York region.

Build trust, partnership and visibility with pastors, parishioners, civic leaders, and corporate partners.

Serve on diocesan, civic, and sector boards to expand CCB’s presence and influence.

Compliance & Operational Excellence

Ensure regulatory compliance, risk management, and ethical standards across all programs and services.

Drive data-informed decision making, operational efficiency, and measurable impact.

Experience and Qualifications

Faith Commitment: Practicing Roman Catholic in good standing, with deep commitment to the Church’s mission, moral teachings, and social justice.

Proven Executive Leadership: At least 10 years of progressive leadership, including 5+ years in a senior executive role within a complex, mission-driven organization; experience in faith-based or Catholic settings strongly preferred.
