Base Salary
$130,061
Qualifications
Admission to the New York State Bar Three (3) years of service in the Associate Court Attorney title; or Eight (8) years of relevant legal experience gained after admission to the New York State Bar.
Distinguishing Features of Work
Court Attorney‑Referees act as special referees and research and analyze complex legal issues and questions raised in civil and criminal cases heard in trial courts or on appeal to certain County Courts. They may be responsible for supervision of court attorneys and support staff located in one or more courts situated throughout a county, judicial district, or department. They serve in a confidential capacity and work with substantial independence from supervision.
Assignment
This position will be assigned to the Sixth Judicial District Law Department, with primary responsibilities in Surrogates Courts matters and Article 81 Guardianship proceedings throughout the ten counties in the Sixth Judicial District.
Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct hearings, either to hear and report or to hear and determine, as authorized Take testimony and prepare reports with findings of facts for judicial review Facilitate and conduct settlement conferences and conduct court‑sponsored mediation when appropriate Assist in caseload management, including case conferencing Conduct Small Claims Assessment Review hearings Research and analyze complex legal questions and issues Prepare confidential memoranda and draft proposed opinions and orders
Travel
Travel may be required throughout the 6th Judicial District.
