Job Summary HR Generalist for the Department of Cognitive Science provides comprehensive personnel, payroll, and administrative support for career, limited/casual staff, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, visiting scholars, and temporary lecturers. Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the HR Generalist independently manages complex payroll, recruitment, hiring, personnel administration, visas, leaves, disability, and benefits, while supporting the AP Analyst on academic personnel matters.
Responsibilities
Manage complex payroll, timekeeping, and benefits administration for a diverse pool of academic and staff personnel.
Recruit, hire, and staff classification for career and limited/casual staff, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, visiting scholars, and temporary lecturers.
Advise supervisors and managers on moderate‑scope HR issues, interpret and implement changes in University policies, and recommend workflow and procedural improvements.
Guide academic HR matters, including academic and staff recruitment, academic reviews, affirmative action, performance appraisals, reclassifications, payroll, timekeeping, leaves, employee relations, and visa procurement.
Collaborate with campus AP and HR managers, the SoSS Dean’s Office, and the CAO on academic appointments and departmental planning.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations; demonstrates organizational and problem‑solving skills.
Basic knowledge of human resources policies and programs, and how they affect other organizational policies and procedures.
Personnel generalist work experience including job descriptions, recruitment, classification, salary administration, performance appraisal, employee benefit and layoffs, and training delivery.
Demonstrated experience and knowledge of complex payroll and timekeeping practices and procedures, salary scales, merits, performance bonuses, and stipends on multi‑funded cost distributions.
Proficient in communicating clearly and effectively verbally and in writing and in integrating information in the completion of assignments; strong oral and writing skills.
Detail oriented, excellent organizational skills and ability to multi‑task and process high volume of work, both transactional and analytical.
Knowledge of organizational policies and procedures and functional area.
Experience interpreting policies and procedures, analyzing data and drawing conclusions, and making recommendations to implement changes for improvement.
Demonstrated ability to handle difficult or volatile situations/individuals effectively and provide effective control of situations or events.
Knowledge of a human resources management system (HRMS) and related business software programs and systems.
Strong critical thinking and analytical skills to identify problems and use creativity to develop innovative solutions.
Strong knowledge, understanding, and experience coordinating and interpreting policies for all leaves of absence including FML, CFRA, and PDL.
Demonstrated political acumen and initiative to exercise excellent judgment, tact, and diplomacy in handling highly confidential and sensitive matters.
Knowledge of personal computer platforms and software tools including spreadsheets or databases, word‑processing, and internet.
Demonstrated knowledge of Google Suites.
Experience advising foreign employees regarding federal regulations and eligibility requirements in relation to visas and employment.
Special Conditions
Job offer is contingent on a clear Background Check.
Mandated CANRA reporter.
Hybrid, minimum 3 days on site.
Overtime may be required.

Pay Transparency Act Annual Full Pay Range: $65,800 - $115,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%). Hourly Equivalent: $31.51 - $55.08. Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. This Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than the University anticipates to pay for this position based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements.
