Career Area Engineering

Job Summary As an Autonomy Engineer at Caterpillar, you will support the engineering workstream to develop Caterpillar’s advanced safety, automated, and autonomous technology solutions to enable our customers to optimize their machines and jobsites. This position will work with divisions inside Caterpillar to support end-to-end product development, product performance, safety, reliability, regulatory compliance, security, consistency, efficiency, ease-of-use, and validation.

What You Will Do

Support delivering robust safety, automation, and autonomy technology solutions through the end-to-end requirements development, systems, troubleshooting, testing and validation

Document requirements, specifications, test and validation reports

Collaborate across an enterprise matrix organization

Hands‑on technical expert for product functionality and performance with involvement in proving ground, early learner, and field follow development

– knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems.

Software Development Life Cycle

– knowledge of software development life cycle; ability to use a structured methodology.

Software Product Testing

– knowledge of software product testing; ability to design, plan, and execute testing strategies.

Application Development Tools

– knowledge of application and system development; ability to use relevant tools.

Artificial Intelligence

– knowledge of AI concepts, technologies and methodologies.

Programming

– knowledge of relevant programming languages and tools.

Technical Troubleshooting

– knowledge of technical troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques.

Considerations For Top Candidates

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Robotics, or Computer Science from an accredited college or university OR equivalent working experience

Experience in Construction Technology Development

Heavy Equipment Technology Development Experience

Construction Technology Application Experience including Mining Technology Application Experience

Demonstrated understanding of developing machine technology

Understanding of Construction Industry Applications, Mining Industry Applications, or related segments

Prior knowledge of assist, automation, or autonomy systems in the areas of positioning, planning, and/or perception

Stays current with emerging technologies in automation, autonomy, AI, and advanced sensing system

Industry Knowledge: Demonstrated understanding of heavy equipment technology development for Construction, Mining, or similar industries

Application Development: Ability to follow standards and guidelines, create engineering documentation, and communicate clearly

Technical Troubleshooting: Ability to discover, analyze, and resolve hardware, software, or application problems using standard tools and vendor-specific tools and utilities

Software Product Testing: Ability to document procedures test activities, test applications/products for compliance with functional requirements and design specifications, and document test results

Summary Pay Range $95,640.00 – $155,400.00
