The Archbishop, a visible principal of unity in his archdiocese, is called to build up the particular Church unceasingly in the communion of all its members, and to ensure that their diverse gifts and ministries, in union with the universal Church, serve to build up all the faithful and to spread the Gospel.

General Summary of Position Purpose Under the direction of the pastoral care & outreach director, the Catholic chaplain (i.e. pastoral care minister) provides a pastoral presence at the King County Correctional Facility (Seattle), King County Juvenile Detention (Seattle), and the Echo Glen Children’s Center (Snoqualmie). This position also serves as a resource on criminal justice issues for local Catholic parishes and faith communities. This is a full‑time (40 hrs/week) deanery position, supported by the four King County deaneries and supervised by the chancery.

Essential Position Duties

Develop and maintain a consistent and effective pastoral presence at the King County Correctional Facility (Seattle), King County Juvenile Detention (Seattle), and the Echo Glen Children’s Center (Snoqualmie) through dialogue with the King County Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention and WA State Juvenile Rehabilitation regarding access to inmates and policies and procedures for the facilities.

Facilitate the presence of priests for the celebration of Mass, and the Sacraments of Penance and Anointing of the Sick when appropriate.

Coordinate and conduct appropriate liturgical services when a priest is not available.

Engage in 1:1 pastoral listening and presence with inmates as needed.

Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers within the assigned facility (i.e. those offering direct ministry to inmates). Engage with Catholic parishes to elicit volunteers and parish support.

Facilitate bible studies, retreats, faith formation classes, OCIA processes, prayer experiences, etc. during designated Catholic activity sessions. Provide CJM presentations for parishes and schools.

Attend regular supervision meetings with the Director of Pastoral Care & Outreach.

Salary and Benefits Salary range: $35.99 – $54.65 per month.
