Assistant Regulatory Affairs Counsel New Jersey Natural Gas (NJNG), a subsidiary of New Jersey Resources is seeking an Assistant Regulatory Affairs Counsel to support NJNG’s regulated natural gas business. The role will manage day‑to‑day legal interactions with regulatory bodies and ensure the company meets state public policy goals.

Major Responsibilities

Draft and file regulatory filings, tracking initiatives across departments.

Manage rate cases and other regulatory proceedings before the NJBPU, drafting applications, testimony, discovery responses, and legal briefs.

Represent the company in hearings and settlement discussions, making oral arguments and cross‑examining witnesses.

Collaborate closely with the Vice President for Regulatory Affairs and internal subject matter experts to develop strategy, build evidentiary records, and ensure procedural compliance.

Advise senior leadership on legal and strategic implications of regulatory initiatives and policy developments.

Monitor and interpret changes in applicable laws, commission orders, and administrative rules affecting NJNG’s gas utility.

Support development of compliance strategies and participate in stakeholder processes or legislative drafting related to utility regulation.

Independently manage multiple dockets and deadlines.

Support NJNG’s commitment to safe work practices.

Manage Affiliate Standards compliance activities, education and internal determinations on transactions and matters.

Continue to update Affiliate Standards Training annually with the Law Department to ensure all associates have completed training and Company is compliant with EDECA.

Maintain internal communications about regulatory activities and provide employees with the necessary information to meet customer needs.

Position Requirements

A law degree at the graduate level is required.

At least 10 years’ relevant experience and strong knowledge of regulated utility industry law and regulations is required.

J.D. degree and a valid attorney license in good standing in New Jersey is preferred.

Experience with administrative law and utility regulation.

Experience practicing before state public utility commissions.

Demonstrated ability to independently support regulatory proceedings such as general rate cases.

Superb negotiation, communication, and project management skills.

Ability to advise senior management and collaborate across teams.

Excellent organizational skills and project management capabilities.

High proficiency in legal research tools and standard office software.

Compensation and Benefits Expected base pay range: $131,800 - $163,600. This role will be eligible to participate in an annual short‑term incentive program.
