The UW School of Dentistry (UWSOD) has an outstanding opportunity for a Dental Assistant 2 (DA2). The Office of Clinical Services (OCS) supports the operations of multiple School of Dentistry clinics in delivering dental care to the state’s largest and most diverse patient population.

This role provides backup support to various clinics within the UW School of Dentistry as needed and supports the educational mission of the school.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Dental Assisting Responsibilities: work with student providers at critical stages of patient care, prioritize work, and coach students in patient management. Interface with supervising licensed dentists who are ultimately responsible for patient care quality.
  • The DA2 may float to other areas of the pre-doctoral clinic (e.g., Sterilization, Dispensaries, Clerkships and other clinics) within the UWSOD as needed.
  • Perform chairside four-handed dentistry with dental students in the Student Teaching clinics.
  • Obtain and prepare dental materials and disposables needed for patient care.
  • Independently operate equipment to take a full range of routine and complex digital radiographs and CBCT scans.
  • Aid dental students, residents, and/or faculty in four-handed dentistry and routine chair-side duties and patient care.
  • Clean and prepare treatment areas following infection control protocols.
  • Conduct inventories and stock supplies; monitor instruments for wear and replacement needs.
  • Suggest process improvements to leadership.
  • Participate in dental student clinic orientations and related training of new staff as assigned.
  • Sterilization Responsibilities: conduct the full sterilization cycle for all School clinics, debride, perform quality checks, wrap and sterilize items, and follow pre-sterilization and sterilization protocols.
  • Monitor instrument flow using scanning software to maintain infection control; operate autoclaves and related equipment; perform biological testing as needed.
  • Maintain logs for hand pieces, cassettes, burs, and spore testing; report discrepancies to the Manager.
  • Coordinate instrument orders and inventory; keep areas clean and organized.
  • Enter inventory data and perform related duties as assigned.
  • Dispensary Responsibilities: check equipment in/out using scanning software, monitor daily reports, stock dispensary supplies, dispense dental materials per policy, and reconcile orders and statements as needed.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Radiology Responsibilities: operate digital intraoral and extraoral radiography equipment, including CBCT; export CBCT images to providers and input images into dental management software; assist with student instruction in X-ray techniques; provide feedback on radiographic quality; report equipment malfunctions promptly.
  • Comply with radiation safety and infection control procedures; participate in quality control testing as needed.

Minimum Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited dental assisting program and current certification as a dental assistant (CDA) or ability to obtain within six months; plus two years of experience as a dental assistant. One year of additional experience may substitute for education.

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except where legal requirements such as license, certification, or registration apply.

Legal Requirement

Registration with the State of Washington as a Dental Assistant.

  • Pay Range Minimum: $44,172.00 annual
  • Pay Range Maximum: $59,484.00 annual
