About The Job

Provide technical skills to operate and maintain central heating and cooling production distribution systems. Responsible for the operation and maintenance of medium and high-pressure boilers, steam systems, cooling towers, chillers, a 30,000 ton-hour thermal energy storage system, and related equipment. Perform maintenance, inspection, testing, logging and reporting as needed on all utility systems. Conduct routine inspections of Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) equipment in the Central Plant, potable water pump-station, and various buildings to ensure proper operations; check, record and adjust operating pressures, flows and temperatures to efficiently operate MEP equipment. Conduct equipment maintenance, clean and change air filters; grease and oil motors and rotating parts; check for leaks, plugged drains, electrical short circuits; turn off equipment in case of improper operation or breakdowns and report needed repairs to Supervisor. Monitor, test, and log water treatment results for boilers, chillers, cooling towers, and TES tank, adjusting water chemistry per vendor guidelines to ensure HVAC equipment operates at optimum efficiency. Monitor mechanical and electrical systems using a Building Automation System. Maintain excellent customer service and perform miscellaneous clean-up work as needed. Respond to emergencies and after-hours requests.

Work involves a variety of building systems and occasional emergency repair situations. Adhere to safety precautions around machines, equipment, and MEP systems. Troubleshoot problems and determine repair methods. Expect non-standard work schedules with variable hours, weekends and holidays, and participation in an on-call program.

This is the first journeyman level position in this series, working under the general direction of the Operations Supervisor or Lead Stationary Engineer. Incumbents perform work independently with substantial latitude in methods and are subject to periodic checks; perform related work as required.

In this position, the employee will operate campus vehicles to transport tools, equipment, materials and personnel to various work locations, adhering to all safety regulations.

Key Responsibilities

OPERATIONS and MAINTENANCE: Demonstrate technical skills to operate, maintain, and repair MEP equipment and campus utility systems; monitor safety systems; oversee Central Plant operations and radio/dispatch functions. Testing: Perform and ensure proper testing and analysis of Central Plant and campus systems; maintain logs and reports related to testing. Training: Participate in safety and technical trainings; provide training on operation and maintenance of fire alarm and fire protections systems; keep current code and regulatory knowledge; stay updated on campus fire life safety systems. Clerical: Conduct related projects, reports, records, and other clerical functions; basic computer skills including email, CMMS, Word, Excel, reporting and timekeeping. Miscellaneous: Support safety requirements (Cal OSHA, UC policy); monitor gauges and alarms; coordinate with supervisor and service contractors; assist other skilled trades and PMs as assigned. Qualifications

Education and Requirements High school diploma or equivalent certification/experience. Completion of a State or Federally recognized (minimum four-year) apprenticeship in the Stationary Engineer trade. Five or more years of progressively responsible related experience in commercial, institutional and/or industrial Plant Operations. Combination of experience and training may substitute for education. Valid US Driver License. Critical Knowledge and Skills Ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical and plumbing schematics and drawings; manage projects within budgets; instruct semi-skilled or unskilled assistants. Knowledge of codes (NEC, ICBO, NFC, UMC, Title 24) and ability to review technical data, blueprints, and diagrams. Current knowledge of safety practices and the ability to work in a team environment with leadership potential. Proficiency with CMMS and computer/ mobile device usage; strong documentation and reporting skills. Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication; ability to convey technical information clearly. Ability to work in inclement weather, climb ladders/scaffolds, and perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods. Ability to support maintenance projects and programmatic work assignments; coordinate with project managers and building inspectors. Ability to maintain up-to-date, accurate project records (plans, specs, submittals, schedules, changes, costs). Ability to comply with EH&S health and safety policies, OSHA and related regulations, and UC policies. Background check required.
