Senior Stationary Engineer – Union College
We are seeking a dedicated
Senior Stationary Engineer
to operate, maintain, and repair equipment within the central plant facility and downstream steam & chilled water distribution, including Gas Fired Turbine, Steam boilers, HRSG, Gas Compressor, Absorption Chiller, Cooling Towers, pumps and motors.
Position Purpose The Senior Stationary Engineer will ensure reliable plant operation and support system upgrades, leading to continuous improvements in efficiency and safety.
Essential Responsibilities & Duties
Assist with the startup, shutdown, and emergency procedures for plant systems including gas-fired turbine, gas compressor, HRSG, gas-fired boilers, absorption chiller, centrifugal chillers, and cooling tower.
Perform water tests for the supply and treatment of boiler feedwater and condensate, and work with vendors to support care and treatment of cooling towers.
Assist in planning, implementing, and overseeing plant upgrades and system modifications.
Operate and adjust PRV steam valves depending on consumption for absorption chiller or main steam distribution.
Monitor control room instrumentation and alarms to identify deficiencies and take corrective actions.
Use the building management systems (BMS) for effective performance monitoring.
Perform building switchovers by draining AHU coil units or filling units depending on season.
Perform preventive and corrective maintenance for plant equipment including boilers, chillers, HRSG, turbine, generators, cooling towers, and air compressors.
Identify leaks, noise, and abnormal conditions, and make recommendations or repairs.
Periodically blow down centrifugal chillers during operations, maintaining proper flow through barrels, including cleaning strainers.
Maintain steam and chilled water manholes by checking ground-water pumps and operations.
Work with vendors for services including the gas compressor, turbine, and chillers.
Utilize the work order system (Works) to track and schedule maintenance.
Participate in the creation and development of standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Identify problem areas by collecting data and understanding P&ID diagrams.
Repair or replace condensate and sump pumps, and perform alignments.
Make necessary repairs to various campus steam traps.
Perform proper Lock-out-Tag-out when working on equipment.
Work in the central plant and all campus facilities.
Cover varied shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays, including open shift coverage as needed.
Maintain a safe work environment through job planning, housekeeping, and hazard identification.
Comply with department and college policies and procedures.
Qualifications
Education: Associate’s degree in plant utilities, electrical, or mechanical engineering.
High School diploma.
Relevant military training will be considered.
Five years’ experience as a boiler operator, nuclear, or stationary engineer.
Experience operating high-pressure steam boilers and distribution.
Experience with central plant chiller systems and distributed chilled water.
Experience operating 13.2 kV and 480 V breakers through a Load Management System (preferred).
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Computer skills including Word, Excel, and Adobe.
Knowledge of Distributed Control Systems (DCS).
Valid New York State driver’s license.
Licensed as a Stationary Engineer and/or Navy plant operator.
Compensation The hourly range for this position is $32–35 per hour. Wage determination will consider qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training.
