(OPEN RECRUITMENT) State Highway Administration Maintenance Contract Inspector (Transportation Engineering Technician III) Grade 12 (8448) SP# 25-85-10 YOU MUST APPLY ONLINE TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION Applications are submitted online for this position. The current vacancies are located at the Annapolis Shop and District 5 Maintenance Office (Anne Arundel County).

Nature of Work

The main purpose of this position is to oversee work performed by skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled work teams; ensure that all materials and equipment are used correctly; and ensure that projects are completed in a timely manner according to the contract’s special provisions and Maryland specifications and standards. Under the direction of the Project Engineer, the Maintenance Contract Inspector will perform duties in maintenance and construction work areas such as highways, ramps, buildings, parking areas, bridges, and snow removal. This position oversees all aspects of work done by contractors such as guardrail installation and repair; paving; highway lighting; herbicide spraying; tractor mowing; tree and brush cutting; inlet repairs; mechanical roadway sweeping and crack sealing. The Maintenance Contract Inspector will keep work records on Inspector Daily Reports and Daily Construction Logs to be entered into the Ledger Book. The position provides basic professional experience to ensure daily maintenance operations in District 5 are carried out correctly, safely, and in compliance with standards and specifications. It may assist the District Operations Engineer and Residence Maintenance Engineer with inspection of district maintenance contracts.

Qualifications

Education:

Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. Experience:

Three (3) years of experience in technical engineering related work in design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning. Selective Qualification:

One (1) year of experience in maintenance and/or construction inspection. Notes:

Applicants may substitute education in a civil engineering curriculum at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience. Applicants who possess an associate degree in engineering, construction management or surveying or surveying technology from an accredited college are considered to have met two years of the required experience. Candidates must possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the state of Maryland and must obtain a valid Maryland Class B Commercial Driver’s License within the probationary period.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have good mathematics and computer software skills.

Additional Information / Special Requirements

Employees in this class are considered essential and must be available for twenty-four hours a day with a response time of less than one hour. Employees will serve a six-month probationary period with the possibility of probation being extended an additional six months. The position is safety sensitive and subject to Drug/Alcohol testing as stated in MDOT Substance Abuse Policy.
