Maintenance Contract Inspector (Transportation Engineering Technician III) State Highway Administration (SHA) District 5 Construction Division is recruiting for a Maintenance Contract Inspector in Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's counties. The position is grade 12 (8448) SP# 25-85-10.

Responsibilities

Oversee work performed by skilled, semi‑skilled, and unskilled work teams on highways, ramps, buildings, parking areas, bridges, and snow removal projects.

Ensure all materials and equipment are used correctly and that projects are completed on schedule and per contract specifications and Maryland standards.

Inspect contractor work, including guardrail installation, paving, highway lighting, herbicide spraying, tractor mowing, tree and brush cutting, inlet repairs, mechanical roadway sweeping, and crack sealing.

Maintain work records on Inspector Daily Reports and Daily Construction Logs and enter data into the Ledger Book.

Assist the District Operations Engineer and Residence Maintenance Engineer in inspecting district maintenance contracts.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Three (3) years of technical engineering related experience in design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning.

One (1) year of experience in maintenance and/or construction inspection.

Valid Maryland driver’s license and a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (probationary as required).

Good mathematics and computer software skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate’s degree in engineering, construction management, surveying, or surveying technology from an accredited community college, college, or university.

Substitution of education and experience per MDOT policy (e.g., 30 semester credits for one year of experience).

Additional Requirements

Essential employee: available 24 hours a day with a response time of less than one hour.

Probationary period of six months, extendable to an additional six months.

Drug/alcohol testing as required by MDOT Substance Abuse Policy.
