Position Summary

The Radiation Therapist (RTT) reports to the Radiation Therapy Lead and provides the technical portion of radiation therapy treatments within the department of Radiation Oncology. Their primary duties include the delivery of radiation treatments according to written prescriptions and treatment plans while ensuring safety in patient care through the consistent practice of departmental procedures for treatment administration. Treatment delivery includes identifying the correct patient, escorting patients to the treatment room, assisting patients onto the treatment table, positioning patients for treatment, delivering radiation from the control room and assisting the patient in exiting the treatment room. The RTT provides and ensures an environment of caring, concern and support for patients, visitors, medical staff and co-workers on a consistent basis. They ensure the quality of treatment delivery through the complete and accurate documentation of treatment records. They recognize deviations from prescribed treatment delivery and report all deviations to the Radiation Therapy Lead and/or Physician. The RTT uses effective communication techniques to explain treatment-related procedures to patients and their families and refers medical questions to appropriate personnel. The RTT observes patients for expected and unexpected reactions to treatments and communicates this to appropriate staff members. They reinforce patient education and side effect management information and indicate non-compliance to medical/nursing staff. Additionally, the RTT may independently perform patient simulations at the request of the physician and collect and document data from the simulation procedure, inputting treatment-related data into the EMR. The RTT assists in treatment-related procedures, including transporting patients, reviewing charts, and ordering supplies. They demonstrate the ability to recognize standard imaging/ARGT and make necessary adjustments to ensure high-quality treatment. The RTT performs and documents daily/weekly QA checks, notifies appropriate clinical team members, and documents findings outside normal operating ranges. The RTT participates in programs to measure and improve quality of care and uses critical thinking to troubleshoot and resolve common quality issues. They capture and verify patient treatment charges.

Key Responsibilities and Technical Skills

The RTT performs technical responsibilities with adherence to policies and procedures. Responsibilities include: Provide radiation therapy services as an essential member of the radiation oncology treatment team Communicate effectively with patients, families and team members Respond to emergencies and provide first aid, CPR, and patient care until a physician or nurse arrives Handle stressful situations, make informed decisions and provide emotional support to patients and families Document accurately treatment set-ups, doses and calculations Use good judgment regarding treatment holds pending consultation with the radiation oncologist Explain procedures to patients and outline communication during treatment and in case of emergency Reinforce skin care, mouth care, diet and general welfare guidance Provide instructional direction to therapists under supervision for routine and complex tumor localization and treatment Fulfill the essential functions of a registered RTT in the clinical setting Evaluate treatment delivery components through QA/QC checks, monitor readings, and respond to equipment issues Assess daily physiological and psychological responses to treatment and provide patient education Maintain ethical practice and comply with applicable laws, standards, and policies Adhere to IT policies, disaster recovery plans, and regulatory requirements in patient care and billing

Education and Qualifications

Minimum: Graduate from an accredited School of Radiation Therapy Technology Preferred: BS Degree in Radiation Therapy Technology or related field Registered Radiation Therapist (ARRT). Dual certification as General Radiographer or CT Technologist preferred Current CPR/BLS certifications Fluency in English; excellent written and oral communication skills. Spanish language ability desirable Travel: Rare Standard work days/hours: Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm

Experience

Minimum of one (1) year active experience as a Radiation Therapist required Will consider recent graduates eligible to sit for the registry; must pass RTT Registry exam within 6 months of hire if recent graduate
