Under the general supervision of the Ultrasound Manager and Lead Ultrasound Technologist, and following established procedures, performs diagnostic procedures to assist the physician in the diagnostic and treatment of illness and injuries by using ultrasound equipment. Produces images using sonography to determine size and depth of tissues. Functions reflect the age-specific needs of geriatric, adult, and pediatric patients. Fosters patient- and family-centered care in accordance with Brown University Health and Rhode Island Hospital mission, vision, and values, considering developmental stages and cultural patterns. Reviews and/or records pertinent history and supporting clinical data to facilitate optimum diagnostic results. Positions patient and instructs patient regarding the procedure to obtain the desired diagnostic result specified by the physician. Conducts scanning procedures using ultrasound equipment; moves the scanner, adjusts settings to focus, and records anatomical/pathophysiological data. Assists physicians in procedures (localizations, biopsies, aspirations) by confirming location with ultrasound, marking the patient, handing instruments, scanning during the procedure, maintaining aseptic conditions, capturing images, and cleaning the treatment area afterward. Assembles information and film, including impressions, and presents to the physician for interpretation. Reviews orders for appropriateness and contacts referring doctors with questions. Reviews daily procedures and schedules examinations; notifies transport to ensure patient readiness. Orders, picks up, and stores supplies; checks expiration dates for supplies and medications. Maintains ultrasound equipment and work area; submits maintenance requests as necessary. Ensures cleaning of scanning room daily and between patients for infection control. Maintains patient safety and comfort during care. Assists with daily operations of the sonographic department and accreditation maintenance. Establishes and maintains ethical working relationships with interrelating hospitals and agencies. Provides clinical experience for diagnostic medical sonography students and offers on-the-job instruction to ultrasound staff and others as assigned. Performs other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications

One year of formal training in an accredited School of Ultrasound or four years of experience as a diagnostic medical sonographer. Current CPR certification from AHA, BLS for Healthcare Providers. Ability to operate ultrasound equipment; ability to lift and move patients into correct positions. Analytical skills to determine the best method to obtain results. Interpersonal skills to work with patients, staff, and physicians under stress. ARDMS certification is required. Knowledge and skills to provide care considering aging processes, human development, and cultural patterns at each care step. Experience: Twelve months of ultrasonography training through an accredited program or ARDMS eligibility for the board examination. Work environment: generally good with some radiation exposure; may involve standing, lifting, and positioning patients; possible visual strain in dim lighting. Pay and Benefits
