The surgical technologist works under the supervision of the registered nurse and medical staff to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive and minimally invasive surgical procedures. This role ensures a safe operating room environment, proper equipment function, and procedures conducted to maximize patient safety. The surgical technologist applies sterile/aseptic technique and uses knowledge of human anatomy and surgical procedures to support the physician’s performance of procedures. Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent Minimum Years of Experience: None Substitutable Education & Experience: None Required Certifications/Licensure: National Certification through NBSTSA (or other certifications acceptable per HR policy); CPR Certification Required Training: Completion of a recognized vocational or hospital-based Operating Room Technician course or equivalent Essential Functions

Performs assigned patient care tasks under the direction of a Registered Nurse and surgeon for procedural tasks Assesses supplies and anticipates needs to expedite procedures, passing instruments and supplies as required Prepares the operating room and maintains sterile technique Maintains instrument counts and ensures replacement of supplies Demonstrates dexterity with surgical instruments and knowledge of procedures Performs equipment, drug, and environmental checks as required by policies Assists in positioning the patient and preparing the operative site; may assist anesthesia as needed Under surgeon direction, performs duties such as retractors, suction, and other tasks; may act as first/second assistant within scope After surgery, assists in moving the patient to recovery and prepares the OR for the next case Participates in case counts and communication with the sterile processing/recall of items Adheres to infection control, decontamination, packaging, and sterilization procedures Maintains emergency readiness for disaster or serious intraoperative events CST Robotic First Assist role: outlined training and competencies for robotic-assisted procedures as applicable Labor and Delivery support: may perform clerical/secretarial duties related to patient records and orders as assigned Hazardous waste management and compliance with regulatory training (RCRA) within required timelines Performs other duties as assigned Duties & Responsibilities (Selected)

Collaborates with care team to update nursing plans of care and advocate for patient goals Maintains surgeon preference cards, labels drugs, and verifies specimens per protocol Document sterilization procedures and maintain instrument counts Mentors new staff and students; supports cost-effective patient care Cooperates with departments to acquire necessary supplies and maintain patient safety Ensures proper operation and reporting of equipment; participates in performance improvement activities Communicates pertinent patient information to the care team and maintains telephone etiquette Acts as liaison to sterile processing and contributes to policy development Uses information from monitors/research to improve practice Maintains knowledge of emergency protocols and OR setup for emergencies Hazardous waste handling and compliance with labeling/shipping requirements Benefits
