Allied health professionals who are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients in a variety of settings. The surgical technologist works under the supervision of the registered nurse and medical staff to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive and minimally invasive surgical procedures. This individual ensures that the operating and office procedure room environment is safe, equipment functions properly, and the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. A surgical technologist possesses expertise in sterile and aseptic technique and combines knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and tools/technologies to facilitate a physician’s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent. Minimum Years of Experience: None. Substitutable Education & Experience: None. Required Certifications/Licensure: National Certification through NBSTSA. Other certifications acceptable per HR Recruitment policy; CPR certification for direct patient caregivers. Required Training: Completion of a recognized vocational or hospital-based Operating Room Technician course or equivalent. Essential Functions
Demonstrates competence to provide developmentally appropriate care for infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients. Performs assigned patient care tasks under the direction of a designated Registered Nurse and works under the surgeon for procedural tasks. Assesses and anticipates needed supplies for scheduled procedures; prepares operating and procedure rooms; selects and secures instruments, equipment, and supplies. Maintains sterile technique and prepares sterile fields according to protocol; responsible for sterilization methods and knowledge of surgical trays and items. Inventory and order supplies; assist in positioning the patient and preparing operative site with surgeon’s request; assist anesthesiologist or anesthetist as needed. Handles retractors, suction, and dressing applications as directed by the surgeon; may act as first or second assistant within scope of practice (excluding suturing, injections, cutting tissue). Performs safety, infection control, and environmental checks; maintains cleanliness and proper use of equipment. Documents sterilization procedures, instrument counts, and surgeon preferences; ensures patient safety throughout procedures. Demonstrates professional behavior aligned with Lexington Medical Center values and Code of Conduct; respects patient rights; participates in continuing education (minimum 12 hours per year) and peer review. Duties & Responsibilities
Assist in moving patients to recovery post-surgery and transports patients for office procedures as needed. Prepare and disinfect operating and office spaces for next procedures; dispose of contaminated materials properly and maintain instrument cleanliness. Collaborate with the nurse, surgeon, and other staff to ensure smooth procedural flow; maintain unit and office activities, participate in meetings, and support learning for students and staff. Maintain professional appearance and positive attitude through change; precept new staff and students; perform other duties as assigned. Benefits
