The hospital offers a range of facilities and postgraduate medical education programs. Job Summary Allied health professionals who are integral to the surgical care team. The student surgical technologist works under the supervision of the registered nurse and medical staff to facilitate safe and effective invasive and minimally invasive procedures. This role ensures the operating room environment is safe, equipment functions properly, and procedures maximize patient safety. The student surgical technologist combines sterile technique, anatomy knowledge, surgical procedures, and available tools and technologies to support the surgeon’s performance of procedures. Currently enrolled in accredited Surgical Tech or Operation Room Technician course Display dexterity in the use of surgical instruments; knowledge of decontamination, packaging and sterilization of instrumentation. Essential Functions

Will perform assigned patient care tasks under the direction and supervision of a designated Registered Nurse. Demonstrates ability to provide comfort and safety measures in accordance with unit standards. Works with the Surgical Team and anesthesia personnel, assists in positioning the patient, prepares the operative site, drapes the patient as requested by the surgeon. During an operation, acts as a member of the surgical team by anticipating the needs of the surgeon to expedite the procedure and pass instruments, sponges, and suture. At appropriate skill level, may hold retractors, suction, apply dressings, etc. Acts as a surgeon’s first or second assistant in the absence of the surgeon’s first assistant within scope of practice, under supervision. Participates in counts with the circulating nurse to assure all counts are correct. Observes for breaks in technique and takes corrective action. Post-operation, assists in moving the patient to recovery and prepares the OR for the next procedure, including disposal of contaminated materials and cleaning equipment. Assists with emergency protocol implementation in the event of disasters in the OR and related setups. Maintains confidentiality and privacy of patients, personnel, and systems information; adheres to infection control policies. Attends hospital or external educational programs and shares knowledge with co-workers. Maintains professional demeanor and appearance; demonstrates receptiveness to change. Attends and participates in at least 75% of staff meetings; reviews minutes for missed content. Performs duties as assigned by the Surgical Team and documents equipment, drug, and environmental checks as required. Duties & Responsibilities

Assists with maintaining cleanliness of the work environment. Demonstrates willingness to learn use and maintenance of assigned equipment. Recognizes and reports malfunctioning equipment. Assists with disposition of used equipment and replacement of supplies. Prepares operating room with appropriate instruments, equipment, and supplies for procedures. Maintains sterile technique and arranges sterile fields according to procedure. Uses proper sterilization methods for equipment under guidance of the Surgical Team. Checks, restocks, inventories, rotates, and reprocesses supplies as assigned. Learns the composition of surgical trays and specialty items used in protocols. Assists with inventories and ordering of supplies for instrument processing. Ensures items are replaced in inventory and reported to the circulator for cases. Communicates pertinent patient information to the RN and maintains open communication with the surgery team. Reports changes in patient condition to the RN and Observes relevant patient needs. Answers phones courteously and relays messages; coordinates with Sterile Processing for instrument needs. Performs other duties as assigned. Benefits
