Facilities Maintenance Mechanic, Plumbing

The Facilities Maintenance Mechanic - Plumbing works independently or as part of a team under the general supervision of the Plumbing Shop Supervisor. The incumbent performs skilled journey-level work in the plumbing trade and applies additional skills in mechanical, electrical, and carpentry trades to maintain, repair, construct, and renovate plumbing systems and related utility infrastructure. Responsibilities include installation, inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of plumbing systems, fixtures, pumps, valves, and backflow devices, as well as responding to emergencies, conducting preventive maintenance, and maintaining accurate records in computerized systems. The incumbent also provides training and work direction to semi-skilled and unskilled staff. Key Responsibilities Perform journey-level plumbing work, including installation, modification, and repair of water, gas, sewage, steam, and fire prevention systems. Maintain and troubleshoot plumbing systems and backflow prevention devices. Assemble, cut, weld, and install pipes, valves, fittings, pumps, and fixtures. Inspect equipment, systems, and completed work for compliance with codes, safety standards, and specifications. Estimate cost, time, and materials for projects and maintain detailed work records in computerized systems. Utilize additional trade skills (mechanical, electrical, carpentry) as needed for maintenance and repairs. Respond to service requests and urgent/emergency calls to prevent equipment failure or hazards. Operate power tools, vehicles, lifts, and other equipment required for maintenance. Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications; prepare rough sketches for projects. Train and provide direction to skilled and semi-skilled workers; ensure compliance with safety protocols. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Thorough knowledge of methods, tools, and materials in plumbing and related trades. Working knowledge of applicable building and safety codes, computerized maintenance, and building automation systems. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings. Ability to estimate time, cost, and materials for maintenance and renovation projects. Strong problem-solving skills, judgment, and discretion in complex work environments. Ability to analyze and respond to emergencies, changing priorities, and multiple tasks. Effective communication and interpersonal skills; ability to foster cooperative working relationships. Ability to use and operate trade equipment, motor vehicles, forklifts, lifts, and other heavy tools. Commitment to customer service, safety, sustainability, and ethical standards Required Qualifications Four years of increasingly responsible experience leading to journey-level skills in facility repair and maintenance, or any reasonable equivalent combination of training and experience as a facilities maintenance mechanic. Must participate in all OSHA required physicals and examinations. Requires the possession of a valid California Driver's License for the operation of any vehicle or equipment required for position and in any emergency situation. Preferred Qualifications Completion of an applicable apprenticeship program. Journey-level standing in plumbing trades. Knowledge of plumbing systems common to commercial or institutional environments. Five years of journey-level plumbing work experience, including large utility systems. Experience in a university or large commercial setting. Compensation Classification: Facilities Maintenance Mechanic Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,274/month - $6,400/month CSU Salary Range: $5,355/month - $7,801/month San José State University offers employees a comprehensive benefits package typically worth 30-35% of your base salary.
