Job Purpose The Solar and EV Maintenance Engineer ensures the reliable operation, maintenance, and lifecycle management of MGE’s solar generation facilities and electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. This role provides technical expertise, vendor oversight, and cross-departmental coordination to support safe, efficient, and customer-focused deployment of distributed energy resources (DERs). The engineer plays a key role in advancing MGE’s clean energy and electrification strategies by maintaining high-performance renewable and electrification assets.

Core Responsibilities Note: This is not an all-inclusive listing.

Manage day-to-day operations, monitoring, and maintenance of MGE-owned solar arrays and EV charging infrastructure.

Lead troubleshooting and root cause analysis across electrical, mechanical, and digital control systems.

Oversee vendor and contractor performance, including service agreements, construction, and maintenance partners.

Track equipment inventory, parts procurement, and maintenance documentation.

Develop and implement preventative maintenance schedules, emergency response procedures, EV and PV standards, and preventative and corrective maintenance procedures.

Serve as backup for wind turbine maintenance engineering responsibilities as needed.

Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.

Provide technical guidance to internal teams, including Customer Experience, Energy Services, and Operations.

Collaborate with engineering, grid operations, and energy supply teams to coordinate system outages, asset upgrades, and performance reporting.

Contribute to the continuous improvement of asset management practices and DER integration strategies.

Skills

Strong knowledge of solar PV systems, inverters, trackers, and utility interconnections. Proficiency: Advanced

Expertise in electric vehicle charging infrastructure and supporting control systems. Proficiency: Advanced

Understanding of battery energy storage and DER integration with utility grids. Proficiency: Intermediate

Proficiency with vendor management, contract administration, and project coordination. Proficiency: Intermediate

Ability to troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, and software-related issues. Proficiency: Advanced

Familiarity with relevant codes and standards (NEC, NESC, IEEE, UL). Proficiency: Intermediate

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, or related discipline required.

Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.

Experience

Experience in utility, renewable energy, or EV infrastructure operations and maintenance.

Demonstrated experience managing contractors, vendors, or technicians.

Proven ability to support customer-facing energy programs or technologies.

Work Location This hybrid role is based at our Madison, WI headquarters. While three days onsite is the minimum, team collaboration and business needs may require additional in-office presence.
