About the Position:
The Landscape Gardner is responsible for assisting in the care of the University’s gardens, lawns, and sports fields alongside other Grounds Staff members. The ideal candidate will have at least one year of related landscaping or groundskeeping experience.
About the Work Unit:
Vanderbilt Maintenance & Operations (VUMO) provides facilities support for construction, renovation, and routine maintenance of University spaces; housekeeping for approximately 5.8 million square feet; grounds care for 330 acres including a registered arboretum; turf care for athletic fields; and utilities for the University Central and Medical Center.
VUMO's annual budget exceeds $100 million, with over 400 employees. It manages major capital projects totaling around $125 million annually, along with facility renewal, replacement, and large maintenance projects costing about $20 million annually.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Mixing and applying herbicides, pesticides, insecticides, and fungicides
Minor irrigation repairs
Litter policing and trash pickup
Weeding in shrub, flower, and groundcover beds
Leaf raking and debris collection
Recycling pickup
Mowing lawns with reel, push, walk-behind, and zero-turn mowers
Pressure washing and hand watering plants
Cleaning stairwells, gutters, and storm drains
Snow removal
Planting trees, shrubs, groundcovers, and flowers
Mulching landscape beds
Lining sports and recreational fields
Herbicide spraying with Roundup
Supporting special events
Storm damage cleanup with arborist crew
Outdoor furniture placement and removal
Lawn maintenance including aeration, slit seeding, overseeding, and fertilizing
Applying pre-emergent herbicides in beds
Occasional bike removal
Operating and maintaining landscape trucks and equipment such as weed eaters, blowers, edgers, loaders, tractors, sprayers, snowplows, woodchippers, and stump grinders
Operating trucks and golf carts
Performing related duties as assigned
Working Hours: Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
Education and Certifications:
High School Diploma or GED required
Bachelor’s degree preferred
Valid Driver’s License required; must maintain a clean driving record
Experience and Skills:
Experience in higher education setting preferred
Ability to lift at least 50 pounds and work in various weather conditions
One year of relevant experience preferred
