Overview The Nurse Manager holds 24-hour accountability for the quality of patient care, efficiency of operations, and human resources management for the department. S/he will strive to achieve the optimal patient experience in a cost-effective manner, while applying evidence-based leadership and practice. The Nurse Manager is responsible for the provision of safe patient care, in a manner that is consistent with professional standards and hospital policies. The Nurse Manager promotes a positive and professional environment; supervises charge nurses and front-line staff; maintains a stable and productive staff; involves staff at all levels in Shared Governance and Magnet Forces; and makes data-driven decisions. S/he will role model performance and behaviors that are consistent with the values of the organization, furthering its mission, vision and strategic plan.

Responsibilities

Supervise day-to-day nursing care and operations for Keck Hospital Same day and PACU.

Promote effective communication and working relationships amongst hospital units, department units, hospital staff and department staff.

Lead recruitment and retention activities; select and retain qualified nursing staff; work with Education and Human Resources to ensure orientation, training, and continuing education.

Collaborate with the Department Chair, Department Division Chiefs, and Management Team to optimize nursing coverage and care.

Maintain governing regulations (Title 22, JCAHO requirements); define and maintain standards of nursing practice; contribute to unit-based performance improvement programs.

Support shared governance and patient/service standards; monitor employee, patient and physician satisfaction; contribute to customer service initiatives.

Monitor space/resource requirements and utilization of outside resources; approve staffing deviations based on patient need.

Ensure Optilink is up to date; flex staff according to patient acuity, census, and budget guidelines.

Approve monthly schedules and time-off requests; apply HR policies for time off and shift changes.

Communicate roles and outcomes to staff; involve staff in quality monitoring and practice improvements.

Collect and delegate data for performance improvement initiatives; ensure timely completion of occurrence reports and investigations.

Coordinate department services across intradepartmental and hospital-wide levels; plan services with qualified staff; support policies and procedures.

Participate in escalation and issue resolution; assist in planning and goal setting for the department.

Monitor staffing and productivity measures; provide coaching on Time and Attendance; ensure timely advancement of new hires to competent, independent practice.

Ensure 100% attendance by staff at mandatory education and training programs (e.g., .edu modules).

Support Shared Governance, Magnet, and Just Culture philosophies.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing

Five (5) years as an RN, with minimum three (3) years ICU experience and two (2) years in Pre-Op and PACU

At least two (2) years in a management or charge nurse capacity

Computer literate in Outlook, Word and Excel

Analytical, problem-solving, planning and evaluation skills

Excellent oral and written communication skills

Committed to excellence in patient care and customer service

Commitment to continuous quality improvement and results-driven outcomes

Strong human resource management skills; able to work independently and in a team; strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in Nursing (in progress is Strongly Preferred; may substitute for Bachelor’s in Nursing)

Critial Care Nursing Certificate (CCRN) or CRN

Required Licenses/Certifications

Registered Nurse (CA) license

Basic Life Support (BLS) from American Heart Association

Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) – must obtain within 30 days of hire if not already current

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) from American Heart Association

The annual base salary range for this position is $145,600.00 - $240,240.00.
