The Nurse Manager holds 24-hour accountability for the quality of patient care, efficiency of operations, and human resources management for the assigned department(s). S/he will strive to achieve the optimal patient experience in a cost-effective manner, while applying evidence-based leadership and practice. The Nurse Manager is responsible for the provision of safe patient care in a manner that is consistent with professional standards and hospital policies. The Nurse Manager promotes a positive and professional environment; supervises charge nurses and front-line staff; maintains a stable and productive staff; involves staff at all levels in Shared Governance and Magnet Forces; and makes data-driven decisions. S/he will role model performance and behaviors aligned with the organization’s values and strategic plan. Responsibilities
Daily rounding with purpose on Charge Nurses and Patients. Promote effective communication and working relationships within the nursing areas, and between nursing staff, physicians, and other departments. Lead Unit Council meetings and track progress and outcomes. Recruit, select, and retain qualified nursing staff to carry out the unit’s care system; coordinate with Education and Human Resources to ensure orientation, training, and continuing education; lead recruitment and retention activities. Facilitate training of nursing students and other learners in coordination with the Education Department; serve as a coach and mentor to students. Ensure governance with governing regulations (Title 22, JCAHO) and the development and implementation of unit-based performance improvement programs compliant with applicable regulatory agencies. Contribute to shared governance systems; help establish customer service standards; monitor and improve staff, patient, and physician satisfaction. Communicate staff roles and expectations to maintain a high-performing unit; share quality outcomes and involve staff in practice changes as needed. Collect and report data elements to Nursing Quality in a timely manner. Ensure completion of occurrence reports and timely investigation; notify Risk Management for significant events as required. Coordinate and integrate department services at intra- and inter-departmental and hospital-wide levels. Plan provision of services with appropriate staffing levels; establish policies and procedures to support the scope of services. Lead PSMS initiatives and communicate scores to staff to drive practice changes. Utilize budget to optimize care delivery; participate in planning and goal setting for the nursing department and unit. Monitor space and resource utilization and adjust staffing as needed by patient acuity and census. Approve day-to-day deviations from staffing guidelines based on patient need; ensure staff scheduling aligns with budget guidelines. Maintain up-to-date Optilink and flex staff according to patient needs. Approve monthly schedules and advance requests for time off; apply HR policies for time off and shift changes. Oversee payroll activities (DSR and Kronos) and ensure timely processing. Coach and mentor charge nurses and staff; monitor progress of new hires to ensure timely competency development. Ensure 100% staff attendance at mandatory education and training programs; oversee .edu modules. Support Shared Governance, Magnet, and Just Culture philosophies. Perform other duties as assigned. Required
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing 4 years of RN experience 2 years in a formal management position Computer literacy in Outlook, Word, and Excel Strong analytical, problem-solving, planning, and evaluation skills Excellent oral and written communication Commitment to excellence in patient care and customer service Strong organization and time management skills Ability to function independently and as part of a team Preferred
Master’s degree in Nursing or in progress (strongly preferred); Master’s in Nursing may be in lieu of a Bachelor’s Specialty certification Licenses/Certifications
Registered Nurse (California Board of Registered Nursing) valid California license Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Healthcare Providers from American Heart Association – required for critical care and telemetry departments Fire Life Safety Training (Los Angeles City) or obtain within 30 days of hire if not already held The annual base salary range for this position is $145,600.00 - $240,240.00.
