Position Overview The Senior Safety Systems engineer is a Safety SME responsible for logical and systematic transformation of customer safety requirements and needs into coherent project safety analysis and verification and validation plans. The candidate will utilize modern best-practices and design ideology (such as MBSE) and be the primary technical interface with the customer on all processes involved with successfully analyzing and deploying systems with requirements based in safety standards (such as MIL-STD-882E, DO 187C). The majority of the work will encompass working with QinetiQ’s Software Engineering team, so cognizance of software processes, practices, and terms is essential.
The successful candidate will often act in an advisory role to the DoD customer, guiding such a customer away from poor safety practices toward best-practices for analysis and acceptance of safety critical systems. They will be capable of working in a hands-on context in multi-disciplined integrated product teams consisting of program managers, software, mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing engineers throughout the product lifecycle including requirements development, design, verification/validation, deployment and sustainment. In addition, they will be capable of performing other systems engineering functions as required, including requirements management, verification and validation (V&V), and test engineering.
This candidate must have a proven track record as a systems engineer with a focus on safety and application of recognized standards such as MIL-STD-882 and similar industry standards.
Responsibilities
Interpret system safety requirements and architect safety analysis and verification and validation plans for various DoD projects, including weaponized systems.
Act in a Safety SME advisory capacity to a range of DoD customers.
Verify and validate software system and component performance in accordance with industry safety standards
Development of product design descriptions, requirements and system test documentation, safety analysis reports, and technical analyses against requirements
Use Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) concepts to define and trace system design
Support development of test fixtures to validate complex systems, subsystems, and components
Support integration troubleshooting at system and subsystem levels
Required Qualifications
Bachelors of Science Degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical-Mechanical Engineering, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or Software Engineering; MS preferred.
At least five years of relevant industry experience
Experience developing a Safety Assessment Report (SAR)
Documented, recent, experience with MIL-STD-882 application to software systems
Experience performing safety assessments of fielded DOD safety-critical systems
Experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment
Experience working independently and managing priorities and tasks over multiple projects
Experience with requirements management and traceability
Experience with validation of complex systems
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Must be able to obtain a DOD Security clearance if required
Preferred Qualifications
Experience fielding Safety Critical systems via ATEC
Knowledge and experience with DOD, SAE, IEEE, and/or IPC standards
Experience with DOORS or an equivalent Requirement Management tool
Experience with Model Base System Engineering (MBSE) and SysML using MagicDraw
Experience with software programming (C, C++ and/or C#)
Experience in system reliability analysis using both calculated and measured data
Experience working with DO 178C
Familiarity with CMMI Level 3 Processes
Experience designing test fixtures
Experience with Windchill and Windchill Quality Solutions
Familiar with Data Collection and Analysis tools
