About the Role We are seeking an experienced Automation Engineer to join our team. The successful candidate will design, develop, and implement automation control systems for various industrial processes and warehouse distribution equipment. This role requires a strong background in engineering principles, programming languages, and control system technologies. The focus will be on maximizing equipment reliability and operational performance of systems such as conveyors, sortation systems, scanners, cameras, print and apply systems, and SCADA devices. All activities must follow company policies and safety procedures. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Serve as the site technical expert in automation control systems. Train and mentor Automation Apprentices to ensure compliance with safety and technical standards. Design, develop, implement, and optimize control systems and software programs; maintain and troubleshoot automation machinery. Maintain strict documentation for all automation processes and adhere to client change management procedures. Collaborate with client teams such as building operations and engineering to optimize MHE systems and support project implementation. Understand, maintain, and troubleshoot material handling control systems, including PLC/PC controllers and industrial networks (Ethernet, ControlNet, DeviceNet, Profibus, ASi bus), motor control systems, servo drives, frequency drives, and electrical distribution systems. Monitor MHE metrics, partner with maintenance and operations to resolve system issues, and provide analysis. Provide escalation support during and after business hours, troubleshooting controls hardware and software locally and remotely. Escalate downtime issues to vendors and leadership to restore operations. Facilitate root cause analysis and incident review processes; implement improvements or retraining to prevent recurrence. Assess system performance routinely and lead continuous improvement projects for better performance and cost savings. Communicate technical issues and project timelines with leadership, operations, and engineering teams, explaining impacts and developing operational workarounds as needed. Basic Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, automation engineering, or equivalent, or 2+ years of professional experience. Flexibility to work various shifts, including weekends, nights, and holidays. At least 2 years of experience with PLC-controlled automation and troubleshooting in a continuous process or production environment. Experience with robotics work cells and control systems. Proficiency in Ladder Logic and structured programming with Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or Codesys PLCs. Experience leading or mentoring automation engineering professionals. Excellent verbal and written English skills. Knowledge of electrical theory, robotics, control components, and automated equipment. Ability to interpret policies and procedures and communicate effectively. Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS). Problem-solving skills for system debugging. Adaptability and a continuous learning mindset. Experience coordinating maintenance activities with multiple stakeholders. Preferred Qualifications Advanced degree in relevant fields plus 2+ years of experience. Experience with HMI, control network components, motor controls, SCADA systems, programming software (e.g., RSLogix5000, FT View). Controls design or programming experience, systems integration, and field service engineering. Experience supporting conveyors, sortation systems, and automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS).
