Job Description The Registered Nurse (Hospital-Based) is a competent registered nurse that will deliver nursing care to patients of varying age groups by utilizing the nursing process and nursing practice standards. The Registered Nurse (Hospital-Based) uses:
Nursing Practice Competencies to intervene to achieve safe, optimal patient and family centered care health outcomes;
Leadership Competencies to coordinate patient care and communicate with the care team;
Professional Profile Competencies to develop professionally as a life-long learner, and
Practice Outcomes Competencies to evaluate care based on evidence, the UofL Health quality model, and patient safety goals.
The Registered Nurse (Hospital-Based) demonstrates competency caring for complex patients and participates on the care team to improve the quality of care in the clinical area.
Essential Functions
Under the supervision of a clinical nurse manager, provides nursing care to patients, conducts systematic assessments from admission to discharge across the care continuum, collaborating with the healthcare team, patient and family to address all aspects including age, gender, spiritual, cultural, physical, psychosocial and patient preferences; proactively uses safety surveillance to prevent adverse outcomes
Independently administers medications per licensure authority, assesses and reassesses effects, documents administration timely per policies and regulatory requirements; adheres to patient safety guidelines
Plans care with patient and family using current scientific knowledge and care standards; constructs individualized, age-specific plans and incorporates data from the multi-disciplinary team
Identifies and prioritizes patient problems based on assessment data, patient safety considerations and goals
Implements nursing care interventions to meet patient and family needs; demonstrates competent skills and clinical judgment to promote safety and outcomes
Assesses and evaluates outcomes of patient and family teaching; tailors teaching to age, learning needs and cultural background
Evaluates care through regular reviews of responses to interventions; revises plan of care with the team to promote outcomes; recognizes variances and intervenes to prevent adverse events
Advocates for patient and family rights; prepares for discharge and seeks feedback to promote satisfaction
Works collaboratively with unlicensed assistive personnel, per regulatory and legal requirements
Shift Requirements
Shift Length (in hours): 12 hours
# Shifts/Week: 3 shifts per week

Demonstrates professional conduct and accountability for actions and outcomes
Orients new team members and supervises students in assigned duties
May act as relief charge nurse when needed
Maintains professional competency through continuing education and licensure activities
Participates in evidence-based practice activities and discusses outcomes with colleagues
Communicates constructively as a collaborative team member; resolves problems and provides peer feedback
Performs duties cost-effectively and complies with policies and standards
Maintains HIPAA privacy and security compliance
Performs other duties as assigned
Education
Associate’s Degree in Nursing (required)
All new-hire ADN RNs must start a BSN program within 1 year of hire and complete within 3 years (required)
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (preferred)
Experience
All new RN graduates will participate in the Nurse Residency program (required)
Two years of hospital patient care experience (preferred)
Licensure
Current KY RN licensure or compact license with privileges to work in Kentucky (required)
Certification
Basic Life Support (BLS) by American Heart Association (required)
PALS (may be required for specific clinical areas)
ACLS (may be required for specific clinical areas)
Note:
additional, specialized certifications may be required or preferred based on unit
