Senior Controls & Automation Engineer

Location:

Columbus, Georgia

Compensation: Base Salary $100,000 to $140,000 USD (plus up to 10% bonus potential) + Paid Relocation.

Job Overview As a critical technical leader focused on electrical systems, controls infrastructure, and advanced automation within a high-volume manufacturing facility, you will drive plant modernization strategy, leading a multi-million dollar capital project to upgrade and replace obsolete controls.

Key Responsibilities Automation, Modernization & Project Leadership

Lead electrical/controls engineering on major capital projects ($1M+), ensuring planning, execution, and milestone achievement.

Develop and execute migration plans for obsolete or stranded equipment and control systems, maintaining reliability and production capacity.

Standardize and simplify common electrical parts, control systems, and programming logic across the plant.

Implement automation solutions to increase manufacturing efficiency, throughput, and product quality.

Program, troubleshoot, and manage robotic platforms (ABB, Fanuc) and variable frequency drive and servo applications.

Controls & Infrastructure Ownership

Maintain, program, and troubleshoot all plant electrical and controls systems, with high proficiency in Allen–Bradley PLC and HMI applications.

Own low and high‑voltage electrical infrastructure, ensuring safe and reliable operation.

Document legacy control systems and create/maintain documentation for new or modified systems.

Link process capability to controls performance to drive product quality and support safety and environmental compliance.

Operational Support & Compliance

Provide high‑level troubleshooting support for manufacturing operations, diagnosing complex electrical and control system failures.

Apply the NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety to protect staff from arc‑flash energy and shock hazards.

Collaborate with Process Engineering and other departments, supporting IT, HR/Safety, and security systems.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology.

Minimum 3 years of control systems engineering experience in continuous or discrete manufacturing.

Expert‑level proficiency with Allen–Bradley PLC and HMI programming (ladder logic, structured text, communication protocols).

Knowledge of NFPA 70E Electrical Safety standards.

Strong understanding of mechanical systems as they relate to control implementation.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Fanuc robotics or Cognex vision systems.

Experience with Wonderware control software platforms.

Experience drafting control schematics with AutoCAD or Visio.

Knowledge of Lean, Six Sigma principles, or ISO structured business operating models.

Experience with ERP systems such as SAP.

Working Conditions

Work schedule: Monday–Friday, 6:30 AM to 4:30 PM, with occasional alternate schedules for projects or maintenance windows.

Environment: Industrial manufacturing plant; 30% of time on the plant floor, near heavy machinery, high noise levels, mobile equipment.

Physical demands: Ability to access all work areas (climb ladders, negotiate catwalks up to 50 ft), lift up to 50 lbs., work in non-climate controlled environments.

PPE: Standard personal protective equipment (safety‑toed shoes, hearing protection, eye protection; occasionally dust masks or respirators).
