Reporting to the Senior Preconstruction Manager of GNB’s Mission Critical Manufacturing (MCM) division, the successful candidate must be able to work independently in fast-paced, dynamic environments, while being able to multi-task to closely track and manage detailed design activities for multiple high-revenue, mission critical projects simultaneously.
MCM is looking for a self-starter with a strong bias for action who is exceptionally curious, willing to learn, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and is highly detailed oriented. This role will take on exciting projects with high organizational visibility that will have an impact on GNB’s burgeoning Mission Critical Manufacturing business.
The Designer will be responsible for driving the design of MCM’s custom designed and engineered structures from concept (LOD 100) to manufacture (LOD 400/500). The Designer will be intimately involved in the project from the sales cycle to delivery and close out. Through frequent and proactive coordination with both internal and external project stakeholders, the ideal candidate will inject extensive expertise and value engineering input to support and drive the creation of custom and optimized structures that vary from project to project.
Responsibilities:
Generate technical documentation, including design and fabrication drawings (from LOD 100 to LOD 500), Bills of Material (BOM), and product specifications
Translate conceptual sketches, design briefs, and rough technical drawings into accurate and manufacturable design models
Utilize design software program to develop detailed 3D models, assemblies, and shop/fabrication drawings according to project specifications
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineers, project managers, and fabrication shop personnel to understand and/or define and optimize design requirements and project objectives
Conduct in-depth design reviews to ensure compliance with industry standards, quality requirements, best practices, and client requirements
Iterate designs based on feedback, making necessary revisions and adjustments to optimize functionality, performance, manufacturability, and value
Support the design and manufacture of prototypes, including the testing, validation, and manufacture by providing design expertise and incorporating design modifications as needed
Collaborate with external suppliers, vendors, and manufacturers to ensure seamless transition from design to production

Requirements:
Proven experience in a Design/Build environment within the structural steel industry
Extensive experience in the design, detailing, manufacture, and value engineering of customized steel structures
Extensive experience in the design and detailing of structural steel connection schemes
Extensive experience in the creation of detailed fabrication drawings, which include the accurate specification of weld details
Experience in the value engineering of varying types of steel structures
Knowledge of AWS D1.1 and AISC 360
Proficiency in SolidWorks software with a strong understanding of parametric modeling, assembly modeling, and drawing creation
Excellent knowledge of engineering principles, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), and Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles
Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot design issues and propose effective solutions
Demonstrated ability to communicate, present and influence credibly and effectively at all levels of an organization, including executive and C-Suite level
Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly and concisely
Stay updated on the latest design software (i.e. Autodesk and SolidWorks) features, tools, and techniques to enhance design efficiency and productivity
Required Skills and Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience in the building industry
Expert level knowledge of SolidWorks software
Intermediate level software knowledge in Autodesk software (i.e.: Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD, etc.) and other platforms
Expert level software knowledge in Microsoft office programs (i.e.: Office, Excel, Teams, etc.)
Experience in bottoms up estimating and quantity take off
Experience with Lean management and implementation thereof
Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check
Experience, Skills, and Qualification “Pluses”:
Experience with BIM 360 and Autodesk Construction Cloud
Experience with NetSuite ERP system
Experience in sales and marketing tactics as it relates to custom/bespoke steel structures
Experience in the development of Lean oriented Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
